Book Club Meeting - The Accidental (public event)
Join the Social Wave Book Club for a discussion of Ali Smith's The Accidental.
The Accidental is the story of a mysterious stranger, Amber, whose sudden appearance during a family’s summer holiday transforms four unhappy people. Each of the Smarts–parents Eve and Michael, their 17 year old son Magnus, and their 12 year old daughter Astrid–encounter Amber in his or her own solipsistic way, but somehow her presence allows them to see their lives (and their life together) in a new light.
Jeff Turrentine of The Washington Post writes: "Smith is a dazzling talent, fearlessly lassoing different styles and ideas and playfully manipulating them. Though The Accidental is not a conventionally funny novel, readers may find themselves laughing -- in surprise and delight -- at the way Smith takes a literary trope and riffs on it until she's turned it inside out, the way a great jazz musician might."
The Accidental was awarded the prestigious Whitbread Award and was a finalist for the Man Booker Prize, the Orange Prize, and the James Tait Black Memorial Prize.
