Willow Glen Books -- Women's Book Club (public event)
All women are welcome to attend Willow Glen Books' Women's Book Club, held on the fourth Monday of every month. This evening, we'll be discussing A Sense of the World: How a Blind Man Became History's Greatest Traveler by Jason Roberts.
A Sense of the World is the biography of James Holman (1786–1857), a 19th-century British naval officer who was blinded at 25 but who nevertheless became the greatest traveler of his time. Alone, without assistance, he wandered the world from Paris to Canton; studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh; hunted slavers off the coast of Africa; got arrested by one of the czar's elite bodyguards in Siberia; and published several bestselling travel memoirs, providing insights into 18th-century beliefs, mores, and worldly knowledge.
