Nuclear Weapons, Energy, Environment & The Obama Presidency (public event)
Nuclear Weapons, Energy and the Environment – How will the Obama Presidency be defined?
Faced with the prospects that the Taliban could someday control Pakistan’s nuclear weapons, North Korea might develop nuclear-tipped missiles, and Iran may soon become a nuclear power, Obama is banding with fellow world leaders to push for a series of steps to reduce nuclear threats in the near term, while preparing ground for the eventual elimination of nuclear weapons.
At the same time, pressure to move toward cleaner, renewable energy technology and reduce our dependence on foreign oil is increasing and concerns over climate change, air and water quality, and the health effects of environmental degradation are on the world stage.
Taubman, former New York Times reporter specializing in Nuclear Proliferation and National Security Issues and Barringer, National Environmental Correspondent for the New York Times will discuss the forces that will guide Obama’s hand and the challenges he faces tackling these increasingly complex issues.
