This month's featured work is "The War of Don Emmanuel's Nether Parts" by Louis de Bernieres.

According to the write-up on the cover's inside flap:

This rambunctious first novel by the author of the bestselling Corelli's Mandolin is set in an impoverished, violent, yet ravishingly beautiful country somewhere in South America. When the haughty Dona Constanza decides to divert a river to fill her swimming pool, the consequences are at once tragic, heroic, and outrageously funny. "Walks a precarious edge between slapstick and pathos, never once losing its balance."--Washington Post Book World.

"The War of Don Emilio's Nether Parts," de Bernieres's first novel, was awarded the Commonwealth Writers Prize as well as the prize for Best First Book Eurasia Region, 1991.  Many of you may be familiar with one of de Bernieres's later novels, the bestselling "Corelli's Mandolin."

    See you there!

Sorry I couldn't make the gathering, but duty called. Please let me know if you've picked a date for January. Also, refresh my memory on the book. I think it's Grisham's latest?

That's o.k., Tammy! We missed you, but we carried on.

We haven't picked a date for January yet, but we did agree that we'd read Grisham's latest book together. Larry, Miki, and I have placed a reserve on the book in the San Jose Public Library System, but it's taking a while for us to make our way up to the head of the line. We'll probably get our hands on it sometime in December. I seem to remember we three weren't quite sure whether to meet in mid-January, or in late January for consistency's sake.

I think Larry is going to try and catch you in the next day or two and see what you think (but feel free to post here). You da boss-lady for dis here show, after all. flowers.gif

Larry and I looked at the calendar, and were thinking either the 11th or the 18th of January.

We are now #5 on the list for the Grisham book, so we should get it in early December.

Let us know what date is best, and we'll RSVP once it's posted.
