Embellishes is more than just a gifts and greetings store. It’s a goldmine of quirky and wonderful things with personality, flair, humor and attitude—most all of it personally selected by the discerning yet whimsical eye of Priscilla Flynn, the store owner. Almost every item has a story, a message, or a reason for being here and you can ask her about them. She’ll be very forthcoming in telling you that Embellishes is not just retail. It’s a reflection of her life and a way she expresses herself and shares what she finds touching, funny, memorable, or just plain cool with people.

The stuffed animals had to pass a cuddle test for softness and had to have personable facial expressions. The hand painted wooden signs on the wall? Well, besides being funny, clever, and cute, they also came from a company in Colorado that started their business to give jobs and hope to an entire town that was down on its luck. The greeting cards have to be good for a laugh to Priscilla or they’re not going on the shelves. Nothing’s here just because someone will buy it. If it’s here, it’s because the item has the potential to be more than just a purchase when it leaves the store, but a story in someone’s life.

Offering: interesting gifts, greetings, home decor, and things eclectic or quirky

About the Owner

Priscilla Flynn
Approaching sixty, just divorced, freshly disillusioned and leaving behind a business of 34 years. On top of all that, I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and subsequently overmedicated. What’s a gal to do? I went a little Jack Kerouac, packed up my car and told everyone I was going away for a while and went on the road to nowhere in particular.

I wandered around California to do some soul searching. Most of the things I had spent my life pursuing ended up not having a whole lot of meaning for me. So much of me had gone into a construction business that I ran with my ex-husband and I was practically a professional consumer. By the time I came back from my road trip over a month later, I realized that I really wanted to open my own little store and combine the two things I put so much energy into--business and shopping--and made a new road out of what appeared to be two dead ends.

You see, I don’t want or need more stuff myself, but I’m still very good at making finds that other people will want as gifts. I look for the kind of things that are good for brightening a day and hopefully become part of a story. Stuff is just stuff, but stuff that becomes part of a story becomes a memory that you keep forever.
