“1.5 generation” metaphorically denotes the state of being for a group of immigrants within two or more cultures. Many Chinese artists who left the drastic social changes in China during the 1980s immigrated to America at the rise of multiculturalism. These artists demonstrate a new manifestation of cultural fluidity in the US, constructed precisely as a result of dislocation and social difference. Their becoming a1.5 generation represents a hybridized in-between space created at the moment of transit.
