Willow Glen Library and Poetry Center San Jose are pleased to present Bay Area poet Jim Powell, who will be reading from his work. An open mic reading will follow. All are welcome to bring a poem of their own or by a favorite poet to share.

Powell's first collection, It Was Fever That Made The World, was published by University of Chicago Press in 1989 and included poems that won the CCLM younger poets prize in 1986. For this collection and his work as a translator and critic, he received a MacArthur Fellowship, 1993-98. In 1993, Farrar Straus Giroux published his translation of Sappho, and last year Oxford University Press issued a new edition of this work. In April 2009, Pantheon published Substrate, a collection of his poetry of the past dozen years.
