Review Title: Good Ol' Mongolian Grill 20+ Years and Counting [ View All Reviews ]

If the inconvenient location of Su's Mongolian BBQ on a desolate looking block isn't enough to discourage people from going there, then the steel security bars on the windows and doors of its neighbors should effectively kill their business. That's what you'd think, but they've been there over twenty years and they're still drawing a crowd on good nights. They must be doing something right.

I remember Su's fondly as a kid growing up in Santa Clara and when I discovered that they were still around, I had to go pay them my first visit in twenty years. Well, I'm happy to report that I was satisfied with my experience. It wasn't anything extraordinary, but it was what I expected. There's nothing too exciting about Mongolian BBQ, but it sure tastes good if you're in the right mood for it and the food is done right.

My only complaint is that their guide to flavoring your bowl does their food a disservice. They advise you to take a spoon of all of their flavors and mix them together. I've never seen this advised at other grills and I found that splashing in the sugary and tangy sauces really flattened the flavor for me.

The price of admission also gets you a side dish buffet with soup. If you're a fan of this rather simple style of cooking or you're just really hungry, Su's Mongolian Grill is worth the extra effort to try. It's $8 for lunch and $10 for dinner.
