There's a really cool story with rare onsite photos of the square building and other facilities on top of San Jose's Mt. Ununhum. I never realized there was a small ghost town up there and quite frankly, I've always assumed that the square building that's the backdrop of Almaden Valley was actually still in use for some obscure purposes. It turns out it was once a Cold War radar surveilance station watching for a Soviet incursion.

There's a push from locals and some veterans who used to live and work up there to open it up as a park. Well, it'll probably be a while before we see that in today's economy, but maybe someday... In the meantime, it's another ghost town to be fascinated with.

Article from the Mercury News:http://www.mercurynews.com/news/ci_10639993

Photos from the Mercury News:http://www.mercurynewsphoto.com/2008/10/mtumunhum/

More Pics from SummitPost.orghttp://www.summitpost.org/mountain/rock/15...nt-umunhum.html

I walk my dogs everyday around 3:30pm. I love to take them swimming on hot days, on long hikes when we have willing company and with other dogs as much as possible. If anyone wants to join me, I can coordinate a location and time of mutual interest. Midweek, midday is always best as I have company in the evenings and weekends.

I love Los Gatos Trail on hot days, clean water, swim, dogs in heaven. Leash most of the trail.

I hike quicksilver, 1 mile, 2 mile and 4 mile loops depending on the time commitment and company.

I love fontana, park, oakmeadow (with no swimming), Meridian and Camden, Butcher Park, well I pretty much know all the parks to take the dogs.

My dogs are well socialized and obedient to my voice. They are old: 14, 12, 8 yo's so not very agressive in anything. They are the loves of my life and they get treated accordingly.

Anyone want company? I usually have someone three times a week to go for a walk, more always welcomed.

Joe
