Willow Glen Toastmasters Meet Weekly

Willow Glen Icebreakers, a Campbell Toastmasters club, has elected Shawne Smith as President for 2010.

“Initially I came because it was a requirement for graduation from Meru, a small seminary,” Shawne says. “It has been such a good experience I am staying. I really want to be able to speak comfortably,”

The “Toasties”, as they call themselves, enjoy helping each other build the confidence necessary to face an audience. Members learn effective communication techniques and in the process lose the fear of public speaking.

The International Toastmasters organization offers a proven path to communication and leadership skills from the local to the national level.

Willow Glen Icebreakers, men and women of various ages and professions, meet every Wednesday at SarahCare, 450 Marathon Drive, just off Hamilton Avenue in Campbell.

Meetings begin at 7:30 AM and adjourn promptly at 8:30. Annual Toastmaster dues are $54 per year but there is no charge for weekly meetings.

Ariel Dance Productions will be putting on a sweet Broadway musical revue, comprised of songs, scenes and dances derived from the finest Broadway musicals. This revue is designed to provide a performance opportunity for actors, singers and dancers. Auditions are open to adults on:

Car ends up in yard after missed Pollard Road left turn

"A car attempting to make a left turn from Pollard Road onto York Avenue on June 5 lost control and crashed into a home, damaging the house's gas line, police said." No one was hurt and no foul play is suspected. The driver claimed there was a problem with the brakes but an inspection "revealed no malfunction with the brakes". The unoccupied house is near Jack Fischer Park.

Campbell man still recovering after beating

A Campbell man was beaten up on April 24 Pejham on West Hamilton Avenue. He was trying to defend a young woman who was being harassed by a drunk parolee. The victim, Hamid Pejham, is "a 59-year-old convenience store clerk who collects and maintains bicycles in his spare time."

His injuries are detailed below:

Today Pejham can barely stand for a few minutes before he gets too dizzy, a result of the repeated kicks and punches to the head. When speaking, he loses his breath mid-sentence, still reeling from the four broken ribs he endured. He also has a broken nose and cuts above and below his eyes.

The attacker, Kenneth Coberly, was arrested and this is just the latest in a string of many alcohol-related reports the Campbell police have responded to.

This sickens me. If anyone knows how to donate money to Mr. Pejham, please post it here. He hasn't been able to work due to the injuries and therefore can't pay his rent, and has been served an eviction notice. The eviction doesn't make sense to me if he's only a month or two behind.

Planes Late At Night

Anyone have any idea what those planes are doing flying right now? They've been out for at least half an hour. If they're fumigating, I wish they'd let us know because on a hot night like this, we have the windows open, especially the one right next to the clean dishes in the kitchen. I used to hear planes flying as late as 2 am in the past few months. Thankfully I haven't been awake lately at that time to hear them. It's not loud enough to be a nuisance since I don't usually keep the windows open but I've very curious why planes would be flying so late. On hot nights like tonight, the windows will be open and the noise is annoying if one is asleep. The loud motorcycles and noisy cars are annoying too.

Scam Alert: Magazine Solictors & Mail Theft

We just had another door-to-door magazine solicitor come by, despite our glaringly large NO SOLICITING sign on the door. This is probably the fifth time in the past year. This is a scam! Please do not buy magazines from these people! If you already purchased a magazine, you have 72 hours to cancel the order.

The article >Campbell residents warned about mail thefts by Cathy Weselby appears in both the Campbell Reporter (page 6, April 11, 2008) and the Mercury News.

Here's an excerpt:
"The East Campbell Avenue neighborhood has had a lot of magazine solicitors lately," Dehaan said. "I wouldn't say that door-to-door solicitors are responsible [for mail theft], but there have been instances where salespeople go through a neighborhood and most of them are not licensed or permitted."
Dehaan said the solicitors are usually groups of youth who are dropped off in neighborhoods and will tell residents that they're raising money for a trip or for at-risk youth.
"If you see these solicitors, notify the Campbell Police Department, and we will verify if they have a permit or license to solicit door to door," Dehaan said.

ACS - Relay for life of Campbell Volunteers Needed

The American Cancer Society Relay for Life is the largest annual not-for-profit fundraising event in the world. It is an overnight team event that raises awareness of cancer in the community and raises funds to fight cancer. Throughout Relay for Life, teams of friends, family and co-workers commit to keeping at least one member walking on the track...because cancer never sleeps. It will take place right here in Campbell on July 12-13 at the Campbell Community Center.

Last year's event raised over $300,000! Go Campbell!

This event is run primarily via volunteers. If you'd like to help, we sure need you.

Volunteer Opportunities:
* Putting up Posters
* Dropping off and/or Restocking Fliers at different Campbell Businesses.
* Day of the Event Volunteers (set up, staffing, clean up)
* Survivorship Outreach (Letting Survivors Know about the event and inviting them to join us)
* Sponsorship Activities (Reaching out to local businesses for sponsorship, donation (in-kind sponsorship) and teams.

O.k. so here's the deal....I am trying to organize a St. Patricks Day cruise and bar hop.I am on my own trying to get a Nor-Cal chapter of the Chopaderos bike club started.But I can't start a club with out members right?.We are not repesentin the Chopaderos at this point,just trying to see who is serious about this and who is not. So here I am trying to recruit enough guy's and gal's to dust off there rides,custom,oldskool or new skool.....as long as they got a cruiser to ride they should have a good time.Now keep in mind just because we will be stopping at Bar or Pub along the way does not mean you have to drink to ride.Just have a passion for bikes and the lifestyle.I want everyone to have a good time but also remember we could be traveling in a large number so Lets all act accordingly,"The CHOPADEROS are a world wide outlaw bicycle club. Hooters Coming to Campbell

The old Spoons site on the corner of Hamilton and Bascom will become a Hooters and likely open in April.

The cover story in today's Campbell Reporter, Whether it's naughty or nice, Hooters comes to town, says, "Campbell officials have little say as to whether Hooters can open within its city limits...as long as Hooters has
the same operational hours and number of seats as Spoons, the chain
does not have to apply to the city for a conditional-use permit."

I don't plan to patronize it. I think our world has enough tacky and tastelessly-dressed women. What do you think?

Shimmering brass and rich organ accompany 40 Cantabile Chorale voices in an array of familiar Christmas anthems. The spotlight moves in turn from favorites by Renaissance Masters Palestrina, Sch�tz and Praetorius to classic French carols and Regina Caeli by Jonathan Willcocks.

Then on to contemporary works by our three local composers and performers. T. Paul Rosas performs his solo organ work, Festive Gigue. Campbell Community Meeting Report: S. Winchester Dev Plan

A crowd consisting primarily of local residents attended a meeting recently in the Campbell City Hall Chambers to discuss their ideas of the development of Winchester Blvd. from Hamilton to Budd Avenue and to hear city staff present various kinds of design standard possibilities as the boulevard is developed. Led by Acting Community Development Director Jackie Young Lind, ideas and concerns were recorded and recapped at the end of the evening.

Primary concerns were traffic and parking, with citizens asking to know about traffic studies and how parking would affect surrounding neighborhoods. Building massing seemed to worry some and the residential property owners were close to unanimous in wanting to keep new buildings to two stories. Ideas flowed like wanting "buildings to be separated with landscaping to avoid walled-in corridors" and wondering if they could be set back from the sidewalks.

As Young Lind explained, this plan will focus on design standards for the Winchester corridor and not a specific project, but many of the audience members, aware that a complex was being designed for senior citizens where Winchester Hardware once stood (including a number of parcels behind and north of it) felt that traffic and parking concerns could be strong issues.

Already approved is a single story retail development on the property where A&W Root Beer once stood.

The meeting focused on design concepts and some expressed concern that if there was no variation in the architectural design, the area would have a "sameness". About half the audience seemed to favor some differences in design and repeated they didn't want a "Santana Row" look.

A hearing will be schedule with the city's planning commission to further consider the plans for the area.
