Willow Glen Businesses Honor Teacher Liliana Gomez!

San Jose Unified School District is pleased to announce that Liliana Gomez, Willow Glen Elementary's 1st Grade Two-Way Spanish Bilingual Immersion Teacher, has been named the California Association of Bilingual Education's 2010 Teacher of the Year! Ms. Gomez, who joined the teaching staff of Willow Glen Elementary in 2008, has taught Spanish bilingual programs in large urban districts for 13 years. Notably, she was part of the planning and implementation process of the Two Way Program, where teachers lead students in learning a second language as they increase their academic knowledge in all areas.
Willow Glen businesses are proud of Ms. Gomez's achievements and are showing their pride by offering specials in her honor on Friday, March 19, 2010. Willow Glen Coffee Roasting Company will be serving the Liliana Gomez Honorary Colombian Roast all day, honoring Ms. Gomez's birthplace; Aqui Cal-Mex will be serving the Liliana Gomez Colombian Special of the Day; Willow Glen Frozen Yogurt Company will be serving Liliana's Special Flavor of the Day; and Bill's Cafe will be serving a "Huevos Liliana" breakfast special all week.

Learn how to lessen your chance of injury and improve your muscle function by integrating just a few simple full body exercises into your training routine.
You’ll also learn three simple exercises to help your achy knees and back, how to strengthen your core without doing a single crunch, and two ways to improve your strength and power in your own backyard. The Willow Glen Community & Senior Center at 2175 Lincoln Avenue is pleased to announce that the construction on our Senior Center Kitchen is complete! We're now back to cooking and serving great lunches. Come on over, have a great meal with us, and meet new friends!
Lunch is served Monday-Friday at 12pm. Lunch usually includes a main entree, vegetables, side dish, salad, fruit, and milk for a suggested donation of $2.50 for those age 60 years and older. Ready for the trip of a lifetime? Study dance and music and tour Egypt with a native dancer! Halanda Studio's summer Egypt tour is June 9-23, and the registration deadline is April 6, 2010.
Spend two weeks out of this world and into the magic of Middle Eastern music and dance! We take small groups for maximum enjoyment and comfort. During the trip we will: visit all of Cairo's major tourist attractions; shop, ride the camels, smoke the 'shisha' and relax by the Nile; dance and study at The Nile Group Dance Festival and/or study your favorite instrument with top instructors from the College of Arabic Music in Cairo; relax by and swim in the Mediterranean Sea; visit Alexandria's tourist attractions; and tour the Alexandria library. There will also be several "off the beaten path" trips, excursions and surprises!!

Willow Glen 30 Days of Hope - Help for Zambia

Join us for 30 Days of Hope, a San Jose service project that's physically bringing hope to Zambia, a place where over 64% of the people live on less than $1 a day. In fact, the life expectancy is only 38 years, making it one of the most difficult places on earth for a child to survive.
But we can help change that! March 6 - April 4, 2010, a 40-foot shipping container will reside in Downtown Willow Glen at the Church of God of San Jose (host of WG's Trunk or Treat). For the next 30 days, help us pack it full of needed items that will be used for community development!
Items do not have to be new and can include gardening tools, school supplies, fabric, sleeping bags, power tools, computers, etc. All donated items must be in good working condition.
Through Seeds of Hope International Partnerships, these items will be used to teach men and women trades, such as sewing, farming, carpentry, and gardening so they can lift themselves out of poverty. Some will also benefit a local orphanage and help drill clean water wells. In fact, this shipping container already includes a drill rig that will provide clean water for 500,000 people!
