At least 25 people have had their debit card and personal identification numbers stolen while shopping at Lunardi's Supermarket, 720 Blossom Hill Road in Los Gatos, police said today.

I've heard about how thieves are getting more high tech and doing this kind of stuff. It's not common but they also have devices that can intercept your PIN number remotely, kind of like how someone hacks into your computer. I've also heard of thieves installing removable boxes inside the blue USPS drop-off boxes to intercept mail that may contain checks, credit card numbers and gift cards.

This theft just gives me one more reason to use a credit card over an ATM or debit card. Unless the temptation of credit is too great, I never understood why someone would prefer having money taken directly from their checking account rather than having a 30-day grace period and possibly earning rebates and rewards. You also are not liable for fraudulent purchases. I never use my debit card because my bank charges a fee for usage, which I think is lame since it's taking money directly from my own account. I'd rather use my credit card anyway.
http://www.mercurynews.com/ci_9095919

The answer, if you didn't know, is the defunct town of Lexington (and Alma). During the worst of the drought in the early 90's, the tallest pieces of buildings that still remain, started poking their tips over the surface of the receeding water.

That'll happen again soon, but this time it's because the resevoir will be drained for a construction project to upgrade the dam. By June of 2008, they expect the water levels in Lexington Resevoir to dip to 8% and possibly as low as 2%, which means we'll see some of what remains of the ghost towns buried in the water.

As you may have heard, as of March there's a new waste and recycling collector for Campbell, Los Gatos, Monte Sereno, and Saratoga. West Valley Collection and Recycling is in and Greed Valley is out. Their website alludes to some "hiccups" on their first day of service.

Assuming our collection day remained the same, we certainly had a little hiccup here in my area of the Campbell San Tomas Neighborhood. It's 3pm and we haven't seen a garbage truck yet. I went for a run around noon and there seemed to be a lot of untouched garbage carts hanging out on the curb. I tried calling West Valley Collection, but got no answer and they don't seem to believe in answering machines. Their website isn't of any help either.

Huh? Anyone know what's going on with the new folks at West Valley Collection and Recycling?

The Aerts house in Monte Sereno which has done the incredible Christmas displays the past few years is not doing their display this year due to their neighbors successfully lobbying other neighbors and the city to ban his display. The house has received publicity nationwide in the past and it's getting covered again, but this time for the neighborhood dispute.

I can understand the neighbors being a bit upset, but it's a shame that they'd be so ill spirited about it. Personally, I'd put up with the extra hassle if it made so many people happy as the Aerts display has. Couldn't they have settled their differences another way?
