I just recently moved to San Jose but I am very close to Campbell. I was wondering if anyone knows a of a good Veterinarian in the area. I thought it would be better to see someone in the neighborhood instead of driving to Sunnyvale.

One was shot in the eye and had to have his eye removed (total vet bill: $2,200). The owner is now afraid to even let her dogs out in the yard. New track, old track -- I had no idea that so many horses die at the race track! And I assume that during training the same thing happens -- but probably more often.

Reminder: the Humane Society provides 24 hour euthanasia services. Also they have many reaasonable options for taking care of your pets' remains from Individual cremation, to group cremations and burials. They have been so helpful to me as I have many old pets. When you call around to research, you know why they call themselves "THE HUMANE SOCIETY". They can always use your support. They are great people who love our animals.

FYI San Jose Pet services only provides the services during business hours if someone is available. And they only have one option for disposal where you don't know where it is going. Pets don't always cooperate during business hours when someone is avail. And if you think that is bad, call your vet for prices and availability for all these services.]]>

I actually don't have a pet to give away, but someone spammed me this morning with a long pet protection guidelines email and one of the tips listed was to never give away a pet on Craigslist or some other public listing service. It claimed that 70% of people who adopt pets that away have sinister intentions for your pet. Is this warning for real? I'm sure there are bastards like this, but 70%?

Here's the full text from from the email I got:

Hello,

These dogs and many other's in shelters at Los Banos and Merced need
foster homes so they don't get put down. Please pass this on to
friends if you think they could foster for Safe Haven

have 3 to 4 puppies that are in immediate danger of being put to
sleep. Please help me save them!

Boxer mix, female. Very sweet, great with other dogs. Mellow, easy
going. Not a barker. About 4 mos. Pic attached

Boxer/shep mix male, friendly, happy, good with other dogs, more
active but not hyper. About 4 to 5 mos. Kind of in the pic above,
not super clear.

2 Lab (or Lab mixes), both male. About 4 to 5 mos. Look like going
to be big boys. Nice friendly pups. May have adopter for one-will
know tonight for sure. No pics

Also have another long haired Chi or Chi/Pom mix. Very nice dog -
think it's male, can't remember. Under 10lb. Friendly, good with
other dogs. Gold/white color

Have a purebred standard Poodle, choc. color, female. A little
standoffish but nice dog. May be a litttle traumatized - her 2
buddies were killed on the highway as they were running together. I
was at the shelter when the cops brought in the 2 bodies, didn't
know there was a third dog. The next morning as I was leaving
shelter, she was on the corner of the highway near the shelter. I
managed to get a leash on her and took her to the shelter. Needs
grooming, we may have a local groomer clean her up. Very thin too,
seems neglected.

Please let me know if you can help any of these dogs-ASAP!

Yvonne asked that this letter be posted to the yahoo
group. Terri and I also felt it was a good idea.
Please take caution if you find a stray and take it to
Animal Care and Control off Monterey Road. This
letter was written to the director after these people
had this unfortunate and personal experience.

Dear Director Cicirelli:

We are writing to you out of concern, disappointment
and downright anger at a situation that has taken
place at the Animal Care Center on Monterey Road in
San Jose.

We rescued a beautiful, young shepherd mix dog on
Hwy. #680 on March 16. He was running through traffic
and we were able to stop and get him into the car. He
had nearly been hit several times and was exhausted
and frightened. However, he hopped right into our
van, nuzzled us and sat right down quietly for the
trip to your Animal Care Center. When we arrived at
the Center, we checked him in and were told that he
would have 5 days for his family to claim him. After
that time, he would be evaluated by "Craig" the
behaviorist and determined if he was adoptable. When
I phoned on the 17th to see how he was doing, I
accidentally got "Craig" on the emergency line - - he
was rude and not pleasant at all. He told me that the
pup's time would be up on the 22nd and to call back on
the 23rd for a determination.

On the 21st, we went back to the shelter to retrieve
our camera that we had accidentally left there in our
concern over the dog. We had taken pictures of him to
show to our friends to get him adopted. At that time,
the staff told us he was "still" a sweetheart - - but
that we would have to wait for Craig's determination
on the 23rd. We had the staff put into the computer
that we were to be notified prior to any euthanizing
and that we wanted to take him home for adoption. On
the 24th we called to see how his behavior tests went
and after being shuffled to a couple of attendants on
the phone, were told by I think a woman named
"Kelly"??? that the dog had been put down and that I
would have to speak with "Craig" to find out why but
that I could not speak to him until Sunday. I asked
WHY and HOW could this happen when I had been so "on
top of this" and had placed notes in the computer
wishing to claim him. I was told by this person that
rescuers are advised to file a found dog report and
take the dog home if they really want to keep the
animal as once they come to the shelter they BELONG to
the shelter and we have ABSOLUTELY NO SAY in what
happens from there. I was on my way to a business
meeting when I stopped to rescue the dog and had no
place else to take him at the time. I thought he
would be safe there - - -HAH!!! Apparently that is
not so!

I phoned Craig yesterday, Sunday, and left a message
requesting information as to the circumstances of this
dog - - his curt message said he might not get back
for 1 or 2 days!
Well, this IS the second day and I have not heard a
word - - - not that it will really matter any way as
he could tell me anything he liked and at this point I
wouldn't believe him.

I had heard this facility was a "no kill" facility - -
and since that time have spoken with my many animal
lover friends who told me "Don't believe that lie" - -
- since I have contacted my friends on this matter I
have discovered MANY, MANY instances of the"quick"
euthanizing of perfectly healthy young animals that
had adopting homes already in place.

This issue is NOT GOING TO GO AWAY. I will pursue
this until I am satisfied that this type of action can
never happen again. I cannot have complete
satisfaction because you can't bring back my rescued
friend. I will contact the San Jose City Council, my
congressman/woman, Action Line from the Mercury News
and the media. WE LOVE ANIMALS WAY TOO MUCH TO LET
THIS TYPE OF ACTION AT YOUR CENTER CONTINUE. I now
know too many instances of the"QUICK" "put-down" of
animals that makes us want to WARN owners, rescuers,
and simply ordinary people who care about animals NOT
TO COME TO THIS FACILITY FOR ANYTHING!!!!! People who
work at this type of facility need to love and truly
care for animals - - - and while this needs to be run
like a business, there still needs to be some care,
concern and LOVE. These are missing in your facility.
I feel there needs to be a total RE-EVALUATION of how
you run your facility.

Do you get MORE THAN CRAIG'S ONE OPINION on any given
animal? Maybe animals don't like him - - - I don't
think I do - - - -just by listening to him on the
phone!!!

If you can make time to answer my email I would
appreciate it - - - - if not, I will simply assume you
are part of this entire program to rid our area of
unwanted pets!!!!

My favorite walks are:
fontana - midweek, middays, concrete/grass combo
Los Gatos Creek - hot days, swimming holes
Lone hill park - midweek, midday, dry days
leigh high school - rainy days, evenings and weekends
De Anza Park - non soccer nights, or days,
-no untrained dogs, very busy streets
Meridian at Camden - before summer, busy streets
Quicksilver - long walks, no old dogs (over four miles)
Alviso - hot days, windy
Oakmeadow/Vasona - non busy nor rainy days, leash only
Blossom Hill Park - midweek, mid days



I always look for new parks if you have a favorite. I am not a fan of dog parks. I have enough dogs for them to socialize and people are not considerate with their dogs.
