There's a really cool story with rare onsite photos of the square building and other facilities on top of San Jose's Mt. Ununhum. I never realized there was a small ghost town up there and quite frankly, I've always assumed that the square building that's the backdrop of Almaden Valley was actually still in use for some obscure purposes. It turns out it was once a Cold War radar surveilance station watching for a Soviet incursion.

There's a push from locals and some veterans who used to live and work up there to open it up as a park. Well, it'll probably be a while before we see that in today's economy, but maybe someday... In the meantime, it's another ghost town to be fascinated with.

Article from the Mercury News:http://www.mercurynews.com/news/ci_10639993

Photos from the Mercury News:http://www.mercurynewsphoto.com/2008/10/mtumunhum/

More Pics from SummitPost.orghttp://www.summitpost.org/mountain/rock/15...nt-umunhum.html

The owner of the Santana Row Ben & Jerry's claims he is being pushed out by management group Federal Realty. Walid Hazim says he renewed his lease in June 2007 but Federal says he failed to renew the lease. A new tenant, Red Mango, has already been procured and plans to move in as soon as B&J's vacates. I've never heard of Red Mango but apparently they sell frozen yogurt in Hollywood. Aside from the lease disagreement, Red Mango sounds repulsive to me as I hate mangos, and I never knew they were red. I thought they were more of an orange color.

Hazim is fighting back by asking supporters to "write to Santana Row's management company and asking them to rethink their
position and honor the renewal of our lease."
Free burritos mark the grand opening of Chipotle grill along The Alameda

Today (Thursday, April 10) is the grand opening of Chipotle on The Alameda in SJ. If you have the time and inclination to stand in line for hours, you can get a free burrito. I've never eaten there, and for a whopping savings of $3, I'd rather wait til the crowd dies down and pay full price.

Chipotle never appealed to me until I read an article about them, Ode To A Burrito by Arianne Cohen, in Fast Company a couple of weeks ago. I knew they were owned by McDonald's, which equates to fast food to me, which means "blech". Plus we have SO many good taquerias in the Bay Area, why would I want to eat at an El Pollo Loco wannabe?

Turns out Chipotle sounds like my kind of place. According to the Fast Company article, "Chipotle Mexican Grill is the Bono of the fast-food business.... Chipotle's focus [is] on hormone- and antibiotic-free meat that is humanely raised." The article also says the food is really good. So some day I may actually test out this claim.

100% of the pork is "hormone- and antibiotic-free, humanely raised meat, as [is] 80% of its chicken and 50% of its beef. That makes Chipotle the largest restaurant buyer of humanely raised meat," says Cohen.

Sounds like a great business opportunity too since the "average annual revenue of a Chipotle that has been open for more than a year is $1.7 million."

Burger King and Wendy's are now following suit and exploring humane-pork options.

-----

Chipotle Mexican Grill, 975 The Alameda at N. According to a Men's Health survey, San Jose is the No. 1 place in the country to meet single men, and Fremont, of all places, actually placed 6th. San Francisco came in at No. 5. As anyone who's lived here for awhile knows, we sure have a surplus of single men in Man Jose but whether or not they're quality men is highly debatable. The article admits that many of them are "introverted engineer-types".

This survey was presented on The Oprah Winfrey Show so it's expected to bring lots of gold-digging women to the area. Yeehaw!

They also own community based local dailies like the Los Gatos Daily News, Palo Alto Daily News, San Mateo Daily News, Redwood City Daily News, and the Burlingame Daily News

I personally find this to be some very scary news. While Knight-Ridder isn't exactly a home grown Silicon Valley organization, it's headquartered in San Jose and they've given their home territory preferential treatment in their history. For example, the San Jose Mercury News made it online long before it became the industry standard for papers to publish an online version. It was through AOL instead of the web. I bought an AOL subscription in 1994 so I could pick up on news back home while I was going to school in Boston.

Now there's rumors circulating of prospective buyers from far out of state as potential suitors for the Knight-Ridder company or a piece of it.

Pressured, Knight Ridder Ponders Sale of Company
