Social Wave Server Moved!

Hi everyone. We've taken advantage of the Memorial Day weekend lull to move Social Wave to a new server. It had been in its old home for quite a few years and it was a monstrosity of a task to migrate this site to its new place.

As far as I can tell, there are a few hitches to iron out, but for the most part everything is working as expected. If you discover something behaving oddly, please drop us a note at support@socialwave.net so we can make note of it and take care of it.

On a totally different note, I've been wanting to give a Social Wave update for a while. I've actually been working on minor Social Wave features behind the scenes in the past 6 months, but all the work went into improving stuff that needed to work better and making some things easier to use. If my project schedule works out ok, I'm hoping to get some time to start moving Social Wave forward again.

If there are features that you'd like to see integrated into the site, just drop us an email. When I have more details on specific plans for improvements, I'll post a more detailed message, but it won't be until sometime around mid-summer at the earliest.

Social Wave Server Issues Jan 28th and 29th, 2010

Hi everyone, if you've been trying to access Social Wave on Jan 28th or 29th, you may have noticed very slow loading pages and spotty service. This is because we had a server issue that took about two days to identify and resolve. Things should be back to normal now. Sorry for the disruption in service.

No Christmas Lights Bus Tour This Year

A number of people have asked in the past couple of weeks, so I better put up an announcement about this. I regret to announce that I won't be organizing a South Bay Holiday Lights Tour this year. ArsNova and I just got done with planning and hosting our wedding this past week so we're pretty wiped out for any additional type of activity that involves planning and guest lists. Organizing our annual tour on top of what we just went through would have been a bit too much.

While I won't be able to organize an actual tour this year, I'm still hoping to have the time and energy to plot out some routes that you can drive on your own. The routes that I published last year should still be good for the most part. Here's a link to that posting.

HTML Editor Tool Disabled For Events & Topics

I've been getting around to fixing some long ignored bugs in the system lately. One of the things on my todo list was a bug resulting glitchy spacing when the HTML Editor is used in events and topic postings. This was proving to be more difficult than expected to fix so the HTML editor has been disabled for the time being.

Performance Issues Through the Weekend

Social Wave Performance Issues This Week

Over the past few days, you may have had difficulty accessing the Social Wave Main Index or event pages. There's a technical issue that's causing the main index to time out when loading sometimes. Event pages also will load very slowly or time out. The problem appears intermittent. If it happens, you can usually come back an hour later and things will be fine.

This issue only affects the homepage, events, and loading times on the two Social Wave portal sites: DowntownCampbell.com and DowntownWillowGlen.org. You can get to any other area of the site without any problems.

We're hoping to figure out and fix the problem soon. In the meantime, sorry for any inconvenience this may cause you.

Data Center Issues

Update: Still having occasional data center issues as of 10am, Dec 19th.

If you've tried to reach Social Wave on Monday, Dec. 17th, you may have experienced the site being unreachable or responding extremely slow. There were some data center issues that are now mostly resolved, but there may continue to be sporadic connectivity issues for an unknown period of time.

If you can't reach the site, just try back again in 10 minutes. For the time being, you may want to save any posts you want to make with an external editor just in case the site times out on you and your post doesn't make it through.

Responses Not Being Added to Event Message Thread

We're having an issue that is affecting some event postings that causes messages posted as part of an RSVP to not get added to the discussion thread for the event. The RSVP is processed and the notification goes to the event organizer, but the message doesn't show up in public.

This will get fixed this week. In the meantime, if you run into this problem, you can get around it by just clicking on the "Add Reply" button at the very bottom of the Event posting to add your message after you submit your RSVP.

Password Reset Feature Fixed

At long last, the password reset feature has been fixed. If you forget your password, you can again click on the "Forgot Password" link and you can get a link emailed to you that will allow you to change your password to something that you'll remember.

Calling All Web Geeks, Designers, Programmers, Etc

I know you're out there. I know there have got to be plenty of Web designers, Flash hotshots, Web video wizards, programmers, and just 2.0 frame of mind people interested in anything related to Web technology.

Well, I'd like to gather some of you together into the Web Geeks & Designers group. It was added a while back, but I haven't had time to work on building it up.

I intend for this to be a multi-disciplinary group of people who are knowledgeable about different technologies needed in today's websites. This isn't supposed to be a super-guru forum of any one thing. There are plenty of those all over the Web. I want this to be a forum for people like me who do lots of different "Web stuff" and sometimes needs to find a buddy who's really hot at something I'm not at.

Password Reset Feature Not Working Temporarily

We've had a couple of people report that they haven't been able to reset their password using the password reset feature. I'll be checking this out soon and it should be fixed within a week. In the meantime, if you're having password problems, just email us at support@socialwave.net.

Minor Site Updates Released 9/2/07

A series of minor improvements and bug fixes were deployed to the live Social Wave site early this morning. Here's a summary of what's new.

Social Wave Groups

Join Group and Registration Integrated for Guests: Guests who wanted to join a Social Wave group were previously asked to register and then go back and join the group after their accounts were approved. They can now click on a special registration link that appears when they try to join a group as a guest. This link will track their registration against the group that they want to join and upon account activation, they will be automatically processed to join the group.

Event RSVPs

Minor bug that caused the "Notify Me of Updates" box to remain unchecked fixed.
RSVP response boxes for events that have passed or have been canceled are now replaced with a message explaining that RSVPs are no longer accepted because the event has passed.

Topic Image Attachments

A bug that caused small image attachments to error out when creating new topics or editing existing topics has been fixed. Small images as well as larger images can now be attached without incident.

Merchant Profiles

Clone coupon feature was added to allow you to recycle a coupon that has expired or is otherwise no longer valid.

Social Wave Back in the Google Index

After a few months of having problems with Google, Social Wave should be showing up in the Google Index again. The problem actually had nothing to do with any mysterious policy violations as I had assumed, but a coding error on my part that prevented Google from indexing anything from Social Wave.

It may take a while, but Social Wave should return to its usual standing in the Google search index in the coming month or two. My apologies to anyone who missed out on web traffic to stuff they posted here in the past couple of months.

Social Wave Probs with Google Listings - Need an Expert

This year has been one big tech issue headache after another. First it was AOL's mail, then it was Yahoo's Mail. Now that AOL and Yahoo are being cool, it's Google's turn. Only this time it's not a mail issue. Socialwave.net seems to have almost disappeared from Google's search index. This one by far hurts the worst. It's completely killing our site traffic, which has dropped dramatically in the last two months.

I'm trying to get some answers from Google, but their non-existent support makes all the other support deptartments I've dealt with this year look like gold medal winners. You can't contact them. They contact you and they only seem to contact you when you're in gross violation of their policies. A couple of years ago, I did something I wasn't supposed to do and they came after me within a few days. This time around, I noticed that something didn't seem quite right with our index listings a couple of months ago. I first tried to contact them about a month ago and have since tried different routes to get in touch with someone and haven't heard a peep.

So, I'm hoping someone who has experience with an issue like this comes across this thread. If you've had experience dealing with a seemingly compliant site going from having 20,000 indexed pages in Google to <200 in the span of a week, I'd love to pick your brain.

Social Wave Network Problems on Friday, July 20th

If you tried to access Social Wave or any of the Downtown Portals connected to Social Wave (downtowncampbell.com and downtownwillowglen.org) on the evening of Friday, July 20th, you may have experienced an extremely sluggish or inaccessible site. Sorry for the inconvenience. We had some technical difficulties with a change to some network settings that more or less knocked down the site until the problem was discovered and resolved shortly after 1am on Saturday morning.

Yahoo Mail Users Please Add SocialWave to Addressbook

I've been wrestling with Yahoo for the past month about clearing the status of Social Wave newsletter mailings and they either are not able to fix the problem or they're not interested in fixing the problem. Instead of spending countless more hours trying to get them to properly handle email coming from Social Wave, I'd like to ask everyone using Yahoo Mail to add Social Wave email addresses to your addressbook. Adding these addresses will tell Yahoo Mail that we're not spamming you.

If you feel that we're spamming you and you want off, you may unsubscribe here. You can also unsubscribe by clicking on the "unsubscribe" link that's at the bottom of each newsletter.

For those who aren't sure how to add Social Wave to your Yahoo Mail, here's a quick pictoral explanation.

Click on Add Contact under the Addresses Tab

Click on the small triangle next to the Addresses tab to reveal the Addresses menu. Then click on the "Add Contact" link.

Alternately, you can also click on the Address tab itself and end up viewing your addressbook. From that page, you can click on the "Add Contact" button instead.

Enter Contact

You'll then get a form where you can enter one or more contacts into your addressbook. You can give SocialWave any name you wish, but just make sure the email addresses you use are noreply@socialwave.net, news@socialwave.net, and support@socialwave.net.

If you also receive our Downtown Campbell or Downtown Willow Glen Newsletter, you should repeat this process and also add the following email addresses as contacts:

For Downtown Willow Glen: news@downtownwillowglen.org
