Review: Orchard Valley Coffee(Restaurant)
Posted: Nov 30 2004, 03:22 AM
Review of Orchard Valley Coffee
Street: 349 Campbell Ave.
City: Campbell
Phone: 408-374-2115
Type of Cusine: Coffeehouse
Description: Orchard Valley Coffee is a large open space coffee shop located
in the heart of downtown Campbell. Well-worn and well-loved,
it's a true community landmark where you're likely to run into a
familiar face or two. You'll also run into a lot of laptops.
Wireless Internet access is free at OVC and for a few bucks an
hour you can use one of their two Internet stations.
Review Title: Required Sipping For Any Campbellite
Overall Score: 8
(Overall Satisfaction: 10, Value: 10, Quality of Food: 8, Quality of Service: 6, )
My Opinion:
The coffee's usually above average to very good with occasional incidents of being just average. Ironically, for a coffee house, the coffee is almost considered icing on the cake. OVC is a place for people. People gather here, people come here to play chess, people just come in for a drink, people study here, people people watch here. Any respectable Campbellite has been through here before at least once.
With it's open space, large windows, and location on the central corner of Downtown Campbell, OVC became my favorite coffeeshop the first time I discovered it one summer while back home from college in Boston. That was almost ten years ago. I've spent a lot of time here and have a lot of work, reading, writing, and friendships to show for it.
Believe it or not, this coffeeshop was a huge reason why I decided to move here around seven years ago. It's sunny and lazy in the afternoon the way a coffee shop should be like and well lit enough in the evenings to enjoy a cup of coffee while cracking open a book after dinner. The simple things in life can be so good sometimes.

Review Title: Not Quite There
Overall Score: 7
(Overall Satisfaction: 6, Value: 10, Quality of Food: 6, Quality of Service: 6, )
My Opinion:
Maybe this is biting the hand that feeds me, since I am often found there long after my double-espresso has been consumed. Orchard Valley is where I hang out at least 2 mornings a week, so I feel qualified to comment.
The quality of the espresso is lackluster, and the baked goods are about the same. I often need to wear headphones to sheild myself from the icky smooth jazz warbling from the satellite music channel. (Kenny G Christmas music as we speak... Gaaaghh!)
That being said, it's comfortable place to sit, and they provide an invaluable social center for the neighborhood, and I of course love the free wireless internet access - I just wish it was a bit better executed, warmer and more personal.

If it were not for Orchard Valley Cafe I would have not known about SocialWave Communities. OVC - I feel the service is pleasant, friendly, and the atmosphere is perfect for surfing the web, reading, and getting productive work done, in addition I have met some understanding individuals at OVC. If you need to complain, just to complain - hang out @ starbucks. Go OVC

Review Title: OVC - good tables, bad brew
Overall Score: 6
(Overall Satisfaction: 6, Value: 6, Quality of Food: 4, Quality of Service: 8, )
My Opinion:
I thought once OVC changed owners just a couple of months ago, the place might get better. The food is still bad and the coffee leaves a lot to be desired. Espresso drinks are okay, but the brewed stuff is terrible (burnt & watery -especially at night). Don't get me wrong - I've been going there for years and love the atmosphere. But, lately, I've found myself (along with other regulars) going to Starbucks or Coffee Society (not that great either). We all go to OVC and we all wish it was better. The owners live in SF and are not Campbell residents. They could stop the exodus by getting rid of the styrofoam, actually taking an interest in the food and coffee, and understanding what makes this place such a great part of the community. But, then again, they don't live here and it seems they are just in it to squeeze a little profit out of the place. Wish I had bought the place myself!!

I am glad you like the place. I hope I was clear on the fact that I actually do too. So much so, that I am willing to be honest about what could improve in hopes that it will.
I am in there at least 3 times per week spending three to six dollars per visit, so I would hope that my thoughts about my experience there would earn me more than an invitation to go elsewhere.
Here are some things that I DIDN'T mention in my review:
I had in fact resolved to stay away from OVC, and did so for about a year.
I was forever nonplussed by the service, who besides the fact that I order the same two items almost every single day, often required me to come up to the counter and re-request a forgotten item that got lost in the toaster. Not a huge deal, and actually became a fun little game. (the forget-ratio ran around 5:1. Another sidenote: I am sure you can just walk up to the counter and claim they forgot your bagel/donut/muffin/fritter/etc. It happens so often, they'll hand it over without question.)
The espresso was always inconsistent, but after after my fourth or fifth espresso in a row that tasted something like a dirty ashtray I took the time to approach the former owner and tried to tell him that the espresso he was serving was often quite bitter. (Not just my observation, by the way.) He seemed rather indignant at the mere suggestion.
When it comes to espresso, there is no middle ground. It's either good, or unfit for human consumption. If there is something wrong with the roast, grind, preparation, machine pressure or temperature of the water, you will have a cup of hot battery acid. Maybe you could doll it up with milk, chocolate, whipped cream and flavory syrup, but there will be no fooling the straight-espresso drinker. Something was definitely wrong with their product. The disbelief or disinterest of the owner was off-putting to say the least.
Not that I gave two snots what he thought of me or my tactfully-offered opinions, the fact was the coffee was horrid, and I had no sign of hope for change, so I ruefully took my money to Starbucks, all the while wishing I could support a local business instead.
Last Summer, the offer of free wireless internet at OVC lured me in with the promise of careless, leisurely web surfing alongside my neighbors, so I came back with an open mind. The coffee had improved somewhat, and I concluded that I could call the place home again - warts and all. OVC was always a more comfortable and sociable place when you can find a clean table that does not double as a see-saw.
I still don't go there with my family. In spite of being owned by a family that also owns a bakery (Or so I am told) OVC's baked-goods are still often old and sweaty - especially on weekends. My wife still hates the drip-coffee, and the beans purchased there don't yield a satisfying cup of coffee compared to Peets or even Starbucks.
The recent change of ownership has a few changes: It appears they have gotten rid of some of the more surly presences that used to drag themselves around behind the counter encumbered by their numerous piercings. The place appears cleaner. The overall vibe is much better.
The music still sucks, but at least it's consistent.
