Review of Cingular Wireless
Description: Cingular Wireless is the largest wireless company in the United States, with more than 54 million subscribers who use the nation's largest digital voice and data network.

Review Title: Cingular Wireless

My Opinion: Cingular is OK - the rate plan is pretty good - the dead spots are pretty numerous...

Review Title: So Long Cingular! Thanks for the Awful Service!
My Rating: Thumbs Down

My Opinion:
I unwittingly became a Cingular customer after they bought out AT&T. Unfortunately for me, I was only a few months into a two year contract of pretty good reception with AT&T before entering a long stretch of "you're screwed for reception" cell phone contract hell. I wasn't expecting the degradation in service because they were supposed to have integrated AT&T's network in with theirs. If anything, it could only get better, but a cell phone salesman at the T-Mobile store at Westgate in San Jose told me that Cingular simply shut off AT&T's network.

Well, that got me curious, so I searched for info online and there were plenty of complaints of service levels going south for AT&T customers after the merger and there's now a lawsuit against Cingular for overcharging and under providing. They were also recently fined $12.1 million by the California Public Utilities Comission for promising services that they couldn't provide.

My reception at home was so bad that I sometimes had to call my voicemail several times just to enter my voicemail password. It'd keep dropping before I could key in all the digits. My reception elsewhere was better. The calls wouldn't drop, but the reception was still inconsistent.

Review Title: Been there since Pac Bell
My Rating: Thumbs Up!

My Opinion:
I originally got my cell back in the mid 90's when it was still Pac Bell Wireless. In the last year coverage has increased substantially, and I very rarely have dead spots anymore. I have service where other Cingular customers have problems, so the phone apparently does make a difference. If your phone is over a year or so old, you should replace it because they've added more frequencies. I'm also finding that the basic phone seems to have better coverage than the fancier ones. Since they added the new tower in John Morgan Park, I now even get service inside the building at my office so it has definitely helped in Campbell. I even have service in almost all of Rancho San Antonio when I'm all the way at the back of the canyon. I think they've caught up with Verizon here in the valley.

I agree -- with my new phone, service is excellent -- it is now rare that I am in a spot without service. All highways are covered well -- I have service up over 580 towards Stockton, where my brother's Sprint switches over to analog roam (my Cingular does not have analog, am I missing anything?).

I also like the Rollover minutes. It may be just a gimick -- but I like saving the minutes and putting them in the bank. I talk a lot, but being careful, and saving minutes, I have gone over only twice. The first time I was on a business trip and expected and planned for a bigger bill. The second time I was unaware that I went over, and blindsided with a huge bill. I called Cingular and 'splained the situation, and they nicely understood and adjusted the bill!!
