Description: Known to some as the premier venue for folk and acoustic music
in the South Bay, the Espresso Garden & Cafe is home to the
Fiddling Cricket Music Series (Bluegrass/Folk), the South Bay
Folks Open Mic, and all sorts of other musical events.

Review Title: Little Known Venue to Catch a Rising Star
Overall Score: 7
(Overall Rating: 8, Value: 8, Fun: 6, )

My Opinion:
A lot of people express surprise when I tell them that there's a venue in the South Bay that's known as a prime spot for Folk music of all kinds. I suppose they'll still be surprised when they drive up to it because unlike it's older siblings Kuumbwa Jazz Center in Santa Cruz and the Freight and Salvage Coffeehouse in Berkeley, it just looks like an ordinary coffeeshop that happens to have a stage, but it's not.

Most coffeeshops that have music are coffeeshops first and music halls second. You really get the sense that a lot of them only care about selling a few extra cups of coffee, but once the music starts at Espresso Garden, it's a music hall. No espresso drinks for you if you fail to order it before the music starts.

The acoustics are good, the quality of the music lineup is just a notch below what you'd find at the Freight and Salvage or the Kuumbwa, but still very noteworthy nonetheless. Espresso Garden often gets some the same performers who play on the stages of its older siblings. Besides, who can overlook the sentimental home field of the quickly rising bluegrass band, the Waybacks?

My only complaint is that the seating's not very comfortable and especially given the small size of the venue, it can get very cramped and obstructed in there whenever there's a sold out show.
