OK, I'm new to San Jose and to this group, but I felt it appropriate to point out that San Jose is currently hosting a rather serious film festival!

Events begin March 2 (tonight) and run through March 15.

See the link for the schedule of events and location. I thought I'd follow up with a suggested group activity for one or more of the the events, but in the meantime thought others might be interested in having the information.

Thanks for reminding me that Cinequest is starting, Wendy! I always seem to manage to forget that it's going on and miss the movie(s) that I want to catch in it. Yeah, Cinequest is a pretty big festival. Their new 12 screen theater will be great for Cinequest! It used to be so scattered that it was easy to show up at the wrong theater.

I've been so busy that I haven't even looked at the movies in their program yet. Anyone see anything noteworthy that they'd want to see?

Wendy-bird, I would really like to catch some of the festival this year. I've been meaning to go for years, and I've never quite made it there. I think getting a group together is a great idea. I'd be happy to organize it with you!

I'm having a heck of a time trying to navigate the Cinequest website. I want to read about all the films, but I can't seem to find a single list with all the descriptions - you have to go through each film one by one and it's a total drag.

Are there any films in particular that you'd like to go see? I assume you've had a good look through the list already. That would at least narrow down our choices. Maybe we could post brief descriptions of the ones we liked the best and let people comment on them?

That's part of my problem as well: there's so much that it's a bit overwhelming! And I agree that it is hard to get an overview of the movies offered.

I'M GOING TO TRY TO GET TICKETS TO SEE THE WETBACK DOCUMENTARY(see description below) TONIGHT IF ANYONE ELSE WOULD LIKE TO JOIN ME.
There's so much being offered; we should also plan another event in advance if we can overcome the navigational difficulty

A couple that have caught my eye:

Wetback: The Undocumented Documentary 3/4 at 7 pm (which is tonight) or 3/6 at 1:30 pm.

A Silent Movie Fest -
http://www.cinequest.org/2005/programguide...iew.php?eid=117

3/4 7:30 at the California Theatre will be a double feature of Safety Last and Movie Crazy as a tribute to Harold LLoyd. His granddaughter, Suzanne Lloyd, will attend, and talk with audiences about her comedian grandfather. The films will be accompanied by the California Theatre organ.

3/11 7:30 Cecil B Demille's Carmen staring Geraldine Ferrar and King Vidor's La Boheme staring Lillian Gish will be accompanied by the California Theatre organ.

3/6 9:45pm 3/8 5pm Short Program 8: Reflections from the East and Back: a mix of 8 short narrative and documentary films than offer views on the lives of peoples of different cultures, and how they interact, compare ore contrast with familiar ones.

3/6 7:15 pm or 3/10 5pm Emmanuel's Gift
Narrated by Oprah Winfrey, the story of how a disabled boy becomes a legend through determination and courage.

It's hard to choose, isn't it? And I'm just scratching the surface.

There were a collection of shorts from student and amateur filmmakers that they were featuring at the Camera 12. I forgot the dates and times, but that looked interesting to me.

First time I just happened to check in, I've been busy at said festival. This year I bought a pass, because well, I'm seeing everything I can outside of work. I've seen many already, several that were shown 1-3 times and are off the circuit already, but a few still on my list are:

I, Curmudgeon
The Works
Emmanuel's Gift
Amazing Grace
Duck
Almost Guys
Butterfly
Side Effects
Ritchie Boys
Waging A Living
Civilization of Maxwell Bright

I think all of the ones I have seen and can't recommend won't be on again after last night.

Maybe I'll see you all down there!

Student tix are only $5, so if you have student ID, don't forget it.

i think the festival is over and i am currently on a movie embargo, but i have gone in years past. my friend volunteers every year and gets free tix. metro usually has an insert that has movie synopses. i think the mercury news also has the insert -- best to check The Eye next year a month or so before the festival.

Metro also has their entire issues in PDF form on the web, so i'm sure they'd have the cinequest brochure as well, in easy viewing form.
