Review of Almaden Lake Park
Street: Almaden Expwy & Coleman
City: San Jose
Website: http://www.sjparks.org/parks/almadenlake.htm
Description: Almaden Lake Park is 64.9 acres, has restrooms, 95 picnic tables, 19 BBQs, and one playground.

Review Title: Very nice park
Overall Score: 8
(Overall Rating: 8, Value: 8, Fun: 8, )

My Opinion:
I went to this park on Saturday with A.C. We walked around the whole area and it was a nice walk and we noticed a lot of people who were picnicing. A.C. told me that when it gets hotter you can swim in the lake and rent little peddle boats.

This park is poorly maintained and does not allow dogs. The weeds are always overgrown (and thorny) and the water is very murky. I took windsurfing lessons there and I think I learned better because I didn't want to fall into the water. I have several friends who like to jog around it and appreciate the trails are little used (vs Los Gatos Creek trail for example). They charge for parking but you can park on the backside and walk in for free for those short visits.

For an outstanding grass, par course, walking experience try Fontana Park down the street. It starts at Almaden Expressway and goes for a mile under power lines to Coleman. It has great trails, an natural oak forest, two brand new play grounds, great grass areas, automated cross walk reflectors (must see) and soon, a $300,000 DOG PARK. Best of all the parking is free. Almaden really gets royal treatment. FYI the park has a bronze statue of officer Fontana (and a dog) who the Almaden residents were very grateful to.

I did noticed the overgrown plants. I would not go swimming there. I used to have practice out at Lake Merritt, which is man made. It was murky as well. You did not want to fall in. I know better not to swim in man made Lakes. This park just seemed like a nice place to go for a walk, run or ride your bike. I noticed that they do start charging for parking Memorial Weekend. I am new to the area and I was looking for a place to go for a walk. I will look into Fontana

Since you are new and looking.... one of my local favorites and it is inspiring to see the views, is Quicksilver. There is a one mile loop, two mile loop and a four mile loop from the McAbee entrance. JUST MAKE SURE YOU GO IN COUNTER CLOCK wise direction. If you go the other way, you will never come back. It is straight up going clock wise. On the four mile loop, your half way point has a creek with Picnic table. Great spot for a break or lunch. Short loops are busy on weeknights. There are maps at the entrance.

A couple others that make you grateful that you live here: Uvas County park, easy nature hike along a creek with many water falls;
and Henry Coe, as challenging as you like with natural german brown trout flopping around in the creeks and herds of wild turkeys.
