ATM Card Scam - In Case You Didn't Already Know
Posted: May 4 2005, 09:28 PM
This is interesting. There's an ATM Card Theft scam that's been going on and my roommate Teri just got hit for $900 by it. It sounds like an urban legend, but it's not.
Here's how it works. On any ATM like device, they can put a fake "muzzle" on the card reader that dually records info on the magnetic strip as you slide it out. Nearby, they have a small wireless camera that watches what you press into the keypad as your PIN.
Although it's been generally described as an ATM Card scam, Teri suspects it may have happened at a gas station payment machine. Since this happened to someone in my household, I thought I'd pass this info along. The police can't really stop this kind of thing from happening, so they just recommend being careful and advise you to use the same ATM as much as possible so you know when something's not right.
Here's some more info about how the ATM Scam works. They also have photos of one of the devices used to steal ATM card info:

So does the bank cover you for this fraud? I bet they don't. Anybody charges to your account or tries to use your card would be covered but when they use the pin code, probably removes their responsibility.

Believe it or not, our roommate's bank covered her for the fraud, thank goodness.
