Beware of Katrina Phishing Scams and Fake Charities
Posted: Sep 12 2005, 04:39 AM
In case there's anyone who hasn't already heard, the outpouring of support for the victims of Hurricane Katrina has also inspired scammers looking to cash in on everyone's generosity. If you're planning on donating to a relief fund, make sure it's bona fide charity. Be careful of any charities that you're not familiar with and check them against lists of Katrina charities posted at sources that you trust.
One such list is posted on CNN.com:

There's also been some phishing emails masquerading as Red Cross requests for donations going around. If you get an email from the Red Cross or another charity asking for your direct donation, be very wary! The email could take you to a bogus site intended to steal your personal info. If you want to help, don't let an email take you there. Find it online yourself.
