Review Title: Good Customer Service · Overall Score: 6
(Overall Satisfaction: 6, Speed: 6, Quality: 6, Customer Service: 6, )

My Opinion:
I recently had some work done on my car by Pep Boys. The guys that worked in the service area were really nice and answered all my questions and concerns. My car was ready to be picked up a little earlier than I thought which was great. Their prices are very comparable to Midas.

Review Title: poor customer service
Overall Score: 2
(: 2, )

My Opinion:
I phoned the sunnyvale store, requesting a time I should arrive for a short wait for tire installation, and they said they were not busy. After I selected tires for my automobile, the price he quoted was much higher than expected, and when I asked him to expain all the charges on the printout sheet, he had added additional items I did not request, such as front end alignment, and premium tire warrenty. I felt like he was more interested in his commission than in customer service. I requested he remove those charges, and then I waited from 3:15pm until 7pm for the tire installation. Not timely as promised on the phone, and the longest tire installation I have ever experienced, considering they were not busy at the time. I personally felt the added wait was because I questioned his added charges and he lost commission. I could not recommended this store to any of my patients, and have posted negative web responses as well. I was extremely disappointed in customer service

Review Title: Pep Boys was pretty good for battery changes
Overall Score: 8
(: 8, )

My Opinion:
I've been to Pep Boys a few times, but never for anything too significant. I've gone there a couple of times when I needed a new car battery installed and once to get my headlihts changed. I found the service there to be generally good and once just acceptable.

With my battery changes, it's was pretty straight forward. No extra drama, nothing unexpected. I asked for a battery. I asked for a comparsion between the different batteries and prices. I picked one and came back about an hour later and drove away.

I had a pretty good experience with my headlight change. The first time my headlights blew out on my VW Passat, I couldn't figure out how to get to the bulb. I picked out a bulb, dropped my car off, and came back after an hour, but my car was put on hold. The guy at the counter said the mechanic wanted to see me before doing anything and he brought me back. I gave the guy the wrong bulb. It turns out that the high beam and the normal headlight is switched around on 2000 Passats and I couldn't do it myself because I kept trying to change the wrong bulb. He showed me where the normal headlight was and how to get to it. No charge.

I'm not sure I would take my car in to get any significant work done there, but for small things like battery changes, Pep Boys is inexpensive and it's worked fine for me.

Review Title: They played chicken with my friends car
Overall Score: 2
(Overall Satisfaction: 2, Speed: 2, Quality: 2, Customer Service: 2, )

My Opinion:
When my friend went there a few months ago for regular maintenance, two of the guys there actually started playing chicken in the parking lot with my friends car, while we were there!

And after that they didn't even do half of the things they were supposed to do, they didnt change the fluids, fix the wiper blades and several other things that needed to be done.

He complained to the main office and they didn't care at all.

I totally would not suggest you go there unless your willing to verify all your work.

OMG Mosh! That's awful... and hilarious too. I think I might reconsider using them as a cheap battery change station from now on.

If you have a Costco membership, they are great for new tire installs. Unfortunately, they don't do alignments. But a purchase of tires comes with free balancing and rotation for the lifetime of the tires. I've never had any problems with them. They tend to get busy at peak times (weekends) but I try to go during non-peak times or get a ride and drop off the car for a few hours.

I definitely DON'T recommend going to Sears for auto work. I went there a few years ago to get an alignment and they not only put the wrong tire back on my car -- the tire they put on had tar on it! Sears paid for a new replacement but I had to go to Costco to get it since Sears didn't carry it, and I no longer had 4 tires that had the same amount of tread. I think they also recommended that I replace my tires before I did the alignment, even though they still had a good 5,000 miles left on them (I did not replace the tires.)

I also purchased a car stereo several years ago at Sears, not knowing their auto shop doesn't install them. So I had to pay an additional install fee at Circuit City.

I don't generally trust a lot of mechanics. I have my friend do my oil changes. I have 13-year-old Honda Accord with 159,000 miles on it that requires minimal maintenance. I highly recommend a Japanese car if you want something that will last and be reliable. My family's been buying Japanese sedans for the last 20 years with no problems. When it comes to reliability and value, you just can't go wrong with a Honda or Toyota.

Review Title: Dishonest and incompetent
My Rating: Thumbs Down

My Opinion: Everywhere I've been in the U.S. Pep Boys has a well-deserved reputation for being dishonest and incompetent. They are condescending and will charge you for any unnecessary thing they can think of. My most recent and worst experience was with a Pep Boys in Albuquerque. They had recently given me a starter which went bad about a month later. I went in, told them the starter was bad, and waited an hour while they determined that they could not check the starter until I bought a new batter, which I knew to be a lie. I bought a new battery and they finally determined that yes, the starter they sold me was bad. After they replaced it about 2 hours later I returned the new batter I bought (of course the old one works just fine). Throughout they made no effort whatsoever to ensure customer satisfaction, only to try to wring as much money from me as they could.

Wow they used to be so good in Los Angeles. I am glad they aren't that convenient in San Jose. I would have used by now. They have a great price on tires. (4/$1.24 or something like that, just kidding).

Now that is bad customer service. I really hate when they make you wait to fix their problem. I will be extra careful using Pep boys.

Stay away from Jiffy Lube. Snopes.com has confirmed that some Jiffy Lube locations charged customers for work that was never done.

How much do they charge to change a battery? Next time you need one, let us know and we'll change it for free*. smile.gif

*=Does not include cost of battery
