New Computer Recommendations?

We're in the market to replace/upgrade our existing home computer system and, with all the stuff we have on our current system and want transferred, it will require some custom work.

Can anyone recommend an individual or shop?

I was suggested that I post here.

Any responses can be made to me directly at lpratt948@earthlink.net

Thanks.

Hi Larry,

If you want to do it yourself...

The software we use for old to new PC data migration is the commercial version of Aloha Bob's PC Mover. The consumer version is quite similar - allowing you to select and copy data files, setting AND some programs.

If you just need to move data, Favorites, etc. even XP's modest Files and Settings Transfer Wizard isn't bad.

I haven't had any experience with the shops in the area (ClickAway, etc.) nor what they would use, so it would be interesting to hear some consumer input.

If you get stumped - give me a holler!

I've met one of the owners of Help Desk Computers through the Campbell Chamber of Commerce, but I've never had anything done by them and I don't know anyone who's used them before. They've been in the Rinconada Shopping Center in Los Gatos on the Campbell/Los Gatos Border for years. The guy I met was Paul Lazaga... seemed like a pretty nice guy, but that's all I know. Their website is http://www.helpdeskcomputers.com.

If you've ever seen those "Geek Squad" VW Bugs, they're a computer troubleshooting company that's affiliated with Best Buy Electronics. They have an office at every Best Buy store and I noticed an independent office of theirs on Stevens Creek too. They're basically wall to wall tech support and their site is http://geeksquad.com. Given their relationship with Best Buy, there might be some package deals for a new PC and support. I also have no personal nor knowledge of any experiences with them either.

I've used PC Relocator for AlohaBob as well. It worked pretty well for me. Didn't quite get everything, for some reason, Microsoft Office, Visio, and a couple of utilitly programs (just had to re-download them from the web) had to be re-installed, but other than that it worked well. Their support was very good as well.

I've used helpdesk before. They built my last video editing system for me. I'd give them high marks.
