Furniture Donation
Posted: Jan 9 2007, 11:33 AM
I have some furniture that I would like to donate. There is a sofa, table and chairs among other things. Anyone know of an agency that will pick up in San Jose? I know Goodwill will take the items, but don't want to rent a truck to get the stuff there.

I believe the Salvation Army will pick up.
http://www.salvationarmyusa.org
From their website:
Your used furniture, clothing, and other household items will enable you to make a tax-deductible contribution. The sale of each donated item through The Salvation Army's thrift stores goes to support our addiction recovery programs known as Adult Rehabilitation Centers.
1. To schedule a pick up of goods to be donated please call:

Saint Vincent De Paul of Santa Clara Valley will send a truck to pick up used furniture, and their staff, in my experience, is very nice. The phone number is (408) 993-9500, and here's a link to their contact information:

I am under the impression that what you donate will actually go directly to people and families in need.

There will be stricter donation guidelines this year if you want a tax deduction. I don't think this takes effect until May or June but you will need a written receipt of all donations, including cash donations to the Salvation Army bucket and church donations. I'll post a link later if I find one.

Here's the link I promised.

According to the new rules, donated items must be in "good" condition or better.

And Lastly, if you can't give it away, San Jose will haul away residents large items for $25/ three items. They can be appliances or furniture.
