SBC Global/Yahoo DSL Customers, How's Service Lately?
Posted: Mar 4 2007, 05:13 PM
Hey you SBC Global DSL subscribers out there. Has your DSL service been spotty lately? Several years ago, SBC Global DSL was always hit and miss. It seemed to behave more like cable modem broadband. It'd sputter and pause all the time. For most of the past two years, their service for me has been rock solid. I've had almost no downtime and the connection speed is always consistent. Over the past couple of months, I've noticed that my service has been spotty again. It's not as bad as it was a few years ago, but I'm noticing some slow loading web pages that shouldn't be slow loading.
Anyone else having issues with their SBC DSL lately?

Overall, our service has been excellent. We've had a few minor internet connection difficulties, but they only lasted a couple of seconds, and then corrected themselves. Compared to what we experienced with Earthlink, SBC Global has been paradise.
We have experienced difficulty from time to time with Yahoo being the preferred home page on SBC Global. But even that hasn't been as bad as our previous experience.

I've had a few times that I can't reach the Social Wave site when I'm assigned certain IP addresses by SBCGlobal DSL. It's a wierd problem. I just have to reset my modem until I get a new IP address that doesn't have a problem. The first few times, I went crazy trying to figure out why the server was down.

Well, now that you mention it, I have had times when a web site or so would not pull up. I always just figured some mysterious force was in effect and I just could not reach the site. I never thought that it was just me or the modem...
Just the other day I tried to load my site and no go. I tired for about five minutes, gave up and went on with my life. Later, the site loaded -- I never thought about, or figured out the cause...

If your website just goes out for a minute or two, it's most likely a network problem blocking you from getting to the server. If it's down for more than a few minutes, it can be any number of things.
If you ever want to know if the problem is only affecting your connection to the Internet or if the website is actually down, there's a couple of things you can try:
1) Use a cell phone or PDA with web browsing capabilities to try to access your website to see if it shows up. Those will be going over a somewhat different network path so it'll likely get through if the site is still up.
2) Open up a telnet/ssh window and ping your website to see if it responds. On a Mac you can also launch the Network Utility program and ping your site to see if it responds. Then goto a remote site like Network Tools and ping your site from there.
A ping is basically a "Hello Are You There?" message sent to a server to see if it responds and how fast it responds. It doesn't necessarily tell you the status of the website though. The server can still be up and running even after the programs that handle the webserver crash. The ping just tells you if you can get to your server at all.
