Does anyone know of anyone around the Bay Area whose pet may have gotten sick from tainted food?

On a serious and comic note, there was a Canadian woman who got sick herself after eating her dog's dog food to encourage her dog to eat. Her dog wouldn't eat, so she ate some of it to trick her dog into thinking it was people food.

I'm just glad that we had a nice big supply of cat food to last a while when this whole thing hit.

Ok, wow! There's been some new news on the tainted pet food front and it is NOT GOOD. First, the estimated death count went up. Waaaay up. The FDA is now saying there could have been as many as 4,000 pet deaths. Surely some of those are pets that died for other reasons, but there are probably a good number of deaths that were never reported too.

There was an article in the NY Times in the past few days about the common practice of melanine additives in feed and animal food product in China. Melanine is a bogus food additive made from COAL that makes feed appear to have a higher protein count than it actually does. The melamine itself is not what's thought to be killing the pets, but a mix of melamine and cyanuric acid that when mixed together is forming crystales in the kidneys.

Whatever has been making pets ill may have found its way into the human food supply too indirectly (if not directly) through pigs who were fed feed made from disposed pet food. No human illnesses have been reported though.
