Car thefts in Campbell and surrounding areas are up 50%

Car thefts are up 50% in the first part of 2007, according to this article in the Campbell Reporter. If you park your car outside, I'd advise getting an alarm with a starter disable. Cars that are most likely to be stolen include early 1990s Honda Civics and Honda Accords, Saturns and Toyota Camrys.

Excerpts from the article:

* With car thefts on the rise in Campbell, police are advising all residents to lock their vehicles and keep their valuables with them.

* Norris said the current increase in auto thefts might be due to gang members stealing cars that are used in crimes.

Here are a few tips from the Campbell Police Department's website:

Below are some tips you can use to avoid being the victim of a car thief:

* Never leave your car running unattended, even to dash into a business, store, etc.;
* Never leave any keys in the car or ignition, inside a locked garage, or in hide-a-key boxes;
* Always roll up your windows and lock the car, even if it is parked in front of your home;
* Never leave valuables in plain view, even if your car is locked.
* Put them in the trunk out of sight;
* Always park in high-traffic, well-lighted areas, when possible

Those cars you mentioned are basically the same cars that have always had a problem with getting stolen. What was the reasoning for that trend? Was it because they're the best value for parts?

There's also a rise in car thefts that are quickly recovered because the people stealing the cars are no longer out to strip the car or sell it. They're now out to steal personal information contained in the car. It's part of the growing problem of identity theft.

The article didn't elaborate but my guess is that they're easy to break into and steal. Plus they're pretty common cars so it makes sense that a lot of them will be stolen.
