There was an interesting post on Dean Takahashi's blog in the Mercury News today. It helps dispel the myth that Macs cost more than PCs. As a lifelong Mac evangelist, I have never been able to pay money for a PC and I don't think I ever will. The gist of the post is that Macs provide more value than PCs, and in some cases, are actually cheaper than PCs. AJ Strong posted a comment pointing out that Macs come loaded with applications that people will actually use, as opposed to PCs that come with tons of programs that most people will never actually use.

I think it can depend on the brand we're talking about. If we're talking name brands like Dell vs. Apple, I don't think there's much difference. Now if you want to go with some fly-by-night labels, there's no way you can get any cheaper than that... but buyer beware. The $400 laptop at Wal-Mart is of course, not the same as a similar looking Dell or Mac.

If you want to go high end PCs vs. high end Macs, the high end PC's, the high end PC's actually cost more. Like Alienware PC's for example. Their high end machine costs over a $1000 more than the highest end MacBookPro.

Alienware makes some really cool machines! I definitely would not weep if this was my everyday machine.

On the other extreme, you have the aspiring $100 laptop:

Well, that's not a true PC as we think about it. It's not running Windows and it's basically a whole other animal from what we think of as a Mac or as a PC.
