Angie's List

Has anyone tried Angie's List? It's a site where people review contractors. It's gotten a lot of press recently and I've seen their ads in the Mercury News.
I haven't had much need for a contractor so the membership fee of $53 a year plus a sign-up fee of $10 seems a bit steep. I only have occasional needs for contractors, but when I do, I usually don't know who to trust. I rely on personal recommendations, which aren't always easy to find. You can also sign up for $6.95 a month if you pay month-to-month.

Pam, you might want to try Diamond Certified:

Their recommended businesses go through a pretty rigorous screening process, it would seem, and it's free to look up businesses listed by them.

There is also ServiceMagic. They go through a rigorous screening as well. We've had very good luck using them in the past.
Their address is http://www.servicemagic.com/

I actually dealt with ServiceMagic when I worked for a realtor. They really wanted us to give them a try and were very persistent and kind of rude about it. It left a bad taste in my mouth. I've since read a lot about SM but I tend not to forget bad service.

Just because a merchant is listed on Diamond Certified doesn't mean they're a good business or honest. Our antique tub came from a business down the street listed as Diamond Certified. They knowingly put the wrong feet on the back of the tub and now it doesn't properly drain. There isn't anything I can do to fix it because I agreed to have the same four feet on it - not knowing that it was a tub that required two higher back feet to drain properly. That was something she should have explained because there was no way to visually see the difference. As they deal in antique tubs, they certainly know what they're doing. Diamond Certified is no guarantee.
I was sad to see Angie's list start to charge for their services.
