Honey, please go check the back door...

Honey, please go check the back door. I think that you forgot to lock it. And while you are up, put out the cat and the trash...
I hate to be coarse -- but What the F***! Locks on the White House doors? Does the President carry a key to the front door -- the most powerful person in the Free World?
Ain't there armed Secret Service stationed 24/7?
I saw a photo earlier of a door in the background -- and when I came across this photo in US News I just had to save it!

I actually remember hearing some fun trivia about presidents who have locked themselves out of the White House at night before. I can't remember which one it is, but Lyndon B Johnson rings a bell.

Maybe it's just habit more than anything else? Or perhaps the Secret Service's job is to make sure everything is double and triple secure. Why not a lock on a door in that case?
But if I were President would I carry around the keys all the time? Or would I make my assistant do that for me? How many keys would you accumulate if you were President? Would it weigh down your pocket? Ruin the line of your designer suit?

Ah! Here's the dog story I was looking for. President Ford gets locked out of the White House while taking his dog Liberty out in the middle of the night at 3am to peruse the wonderful White House lawn facilities.
He went out with his dog and couldn't get back in through the elevator, so he wandered up and down the stairwell trying doors to see if they'd open. Eventually the Secret Service noticed and let him back in.
