Poll: How Do You Ring in the New Year?
A big blowout New Year's Eve Par-TAY into the wee hours!
I get together with a group of friends and do something fun.
I watch the ball drop at home on TV, then go to bed.
Zzzzzz. I celebrate in my sleep.

2008, don't forget that you can't talk on your cell phone without a headset anymore.

More new laws for 2008:

You've been warned: New laws in effect

This is the first year since 1993/94 that I haven't gone out for New Year's Eve. Due to a chronic illness, I haven't been able to do much for most of 2007.

The law allowing you to redeem gift cards within $10 is really cool. Gift cards are already a cash cow already for retailers. I don't remember the stats, but a staggering number of gift cards never get redeemed. Yow! Talk about expensive plastic!

Yeah, I read some stats but can't remember the source.

A recent SF Gate article states:
"According to the Consumer Federation of California, Home Depot and Best Buy each reaped $43 million from unredeemed gift cards in 2005 and 2006."

Retailers weren't too keen on the new law for some valid reasons but unfortunately I can't remember the details either. The new law is definitely more consumer-friendly than merchant-friendly.

To be clear, STARTING July 1st, 2008, you can't talk on hand held cell phone while driving.

Gift card law is any amount under $10 can be cashed out. Most stores already do that: Pet Club, OSH, and others I can't remember.

Stores that didn't before: Home Depot, Petco, Petsmart. I stopped using their cards.

Macys is also evil. One of the many reasons I will no longer shop there:

I got store credit for a $15 Xmas gift. I used it towards a purchase of a few items totalling over $100. I returned one $30 item and they gave me store credit for part of the return! Ridiculous! I've never had any other store do that before.

If you also have their credit card, notice carefully when you log online to pay your bill that they charge an extra $1 each month you have a balance -- you need to manually enter the amount that you actually owe to avoid paying more than you owe. When I called to ask what the extra $1 was for, they had to transfer me since the first person didn't know. They said it was "just in case" I didn't pay my bill in full that month and that I didn't have to pay the extra $1 yet. Mind you, this is several weeks before the bill is even due. Damn straight I was not paying the extra money!

Either they didn't pony up for better IT software and/or they are doing these unscrupulous practices on purpose. I think it is both and refuse to ever shop there again.
