Join the Social Wave Book Club for a dip into the world of non-fiction with Jeffrey Toobin's The Nine: Inside the Secret World of the Supreme Court.

Based on exclusive interviews with justices themselves, The Nine tells the story of the Court through personalities—from Anthony Kennedy's overwhelming sense of self-importance to Clarence Thomas's well-tended grievances against his critics to David Souter's odd nineteenth-century lifestyle. There is also, for the first time, the full behind-the-scenes story of Bush v. Gore—and Sandra Day O'Connor's fateful breach with George W. Bush, the president she helped place in office.

Jeffrey Toobin is a CNN senior legal analyst and staff writer at New Yorker magazine.

Looks interesting. Should I have bought and read the book by then, or is this when we start the book?

Hey Brian!! April 3 is the day we'll be discussing the book - we start reading ASAP. If you start reading it and don't make it all the way through, you can still come and talk about whatever you've read. (Goodness, most of us have had to do that at some point or another.)

Some of us choose to buy the book, but a lot of us check it out from our local library. We always try to select books that are available in the library system, for those of us on tighter budgets. The San Jose Public Library system has a number of copies of "The Nine" available. You may have to place a hold on it, or request it from a different branch, but there are a few copies in circulation that haven't been checked out.

If you're not a member of the library yet, I highly recommend it - it's very easy and the system is absolutely fantastic. Just visit: sjlibrary.org to find your nearest branch and the operating hours.

Since Brian's new to the group, maybe he'd like to offer a suggestion for our next gathering - probably in mid-May.

I'm guessing Tammy will be tied up with night classes through that session.
