Become a Child Advocate! (public event)

Child Advocates of Silicon Valley trains and supports adult (21 ) volunteers to mentor and advocate for children in the Santa Clara County foster care system. We ask that Advocates commit to a child for a minimum of 12 months and see his/her child once a week, for approximately 3 hours, this is generally flexible as long as you are spending quality time with the child. Advocates will also receive 30 hours of training before taking a case. They need to be in good standing with the law, DMV, and be able to pass a background check and submit references. We also have a screening interview before training begins and an evaluation at the end.

Once a person becomes an advocate, approximately every six months, the Advocate submits a court report to the judge, which includes any suggestions the Advocate might have that are in the best interests of the child. Sometimes judges only have 10 to 15 minutes to spend on each child's case, so the information the Advocate provides is extremely valuable.

We also have an Education Advocacy Program that has an advocate focus on the academic success of a child by working with the school staff and professionals. The advocate spends an average of 6-8 hours a month on a case with a once a month visit with the child. The training (18 hours) focuses on the procedures for school, educational law, and types of education.

Also please visit our website at www.BeMyAdvocate.org to learn more about our organization.

The first step to becoming an Advocate is to attend one of our orientations, where you will get a chance to hear more about our program, hear from an Advocate speaker and learn about the application process. The following is a list of upcoming orientation sessions for May. Please RSVP although walk-ins are welcome.
