Planes Late At Night
Posted: May 15 2008, 11:53 PM
Anyone have any idea what those planes are doing flying right now? They've been out for at least half an hour. If they're fumigating, I wish they'd let us know because on a hot night like this, we have the windows open, especially the one right next to the clean dishes in the kitchen. I used to hear planes flying as late as 2 am in the past few months. Thankfully I haven't been awake lately at that time to hear them. It's not loud enough to be a nuisance since I don't usually keep the windows open but I've very curious why planes would be flying so late. On hot nights like tonight, the windows will be open and the noise is annoying if one is asleep. The loud motorcycles and noisy cars are annoying too.

I don't know what planes you are seeing -- but I did just read in the Mercury about the airport.
The article said that one of the two runways will be closed for two weeks for upkeep and as a result the air traffic will be affected and different.

They might have been helicopters last night. I didn't go outside and look but I sure heard them for a good half hour. They usually sound like planes in the other instances.

I don't know if planes are used to fumigate for most things. They were being used for the light brown apple moth program, but usually when we get sprayed for things like mosquitoes to stop West Nile Virus, there's a truck that drives around in the middle of the night misting as it goes along.

Another possibility -- 'they' are flying around looking for swimming pools that are uncared for. Pools without the filter running can harbor mosquitos (sp) and which can have West Nile.

At 10 pm?? I'd think that would be something they'd do during daylight hours. Speaking of helicopters, did you hear about the guy who was trapped in his car for 3 days off 680? They finally located his car with a helicopter.

Yep, it's amazing that it's so easy to practically vanish off the beaten path. I seem to remember a couple of stories of something similar happening on the east coast the past few months. One was a woman who police figured had just run off from her husband and the other was a teenager who disappeared.
KQED announced this morning that flights in and out of SJC are getting redirected starting today for runway construction. One of the runways is getting closed down for work. This means they'll be using the same strip for takeoff and landings and some flight paths will be adjusted.
