I am not a hockey fan so excuse the ignorance. I am a sports fan so I read commentary so .... haven't the Sharks had a lot of big name coaches and could not succeed? How do they expect a non- head coach to fix the problem. The sharks have the big talent according to the sports writers. They keep picking the sharks to contend. Is this another cheap response by the management. It would be like the 49ers hiring the New York Giants (Champions) assistant to solve our football problems. The Yorks would be hung for not selecting a proven entity when they can't get it together. I hope the sharks know what they are doing. I think they have one more year of keeping the talent together, healthy and interested. The Sharks have gotten rid of some very loyal but under producing players so these players have to know that change will be coming if improvements are not realized. They have the goalie, the arena, the revenue, the talent, and the support from the crowds. Even though they lose every time I watch them, the crowd stays behind them the whole game. I go to dinner. I only have so much unconditional love (49ers, raiders, giants, a's, san jose giants and UCLA). I root for the shark fan, they are something else.

Hey Joe, the Sharks have had one big name coach, Ron Wilson. I'm not sure if Daryl Sutter would have been considered a big name coach when he got to San Jose. He probably would have been considered an upper tier coach just short of the big name status, but he was hailed as a big name because in relation to SJ's status as a hockey city at the time, he might as well have been Scotty Bowman.

Who knows if McLennan will work out the way the Sharks planned, but lately there seems to be a surge of previously unknown coaches making names for themselves in the NHL like Dave Tippet in Dallas and the coach of the Washington Capitals. Randy Carlye, he of a recent Stanley Cup win (one year removed), was also an unknown a few years ago.

You're probably comparing this to football where there are the big name coaches who seem to have Super Bowls follow them around. In hockey there's just a retired Scotty Bowman and a lot of Marty Schottenheimer equivalents.

I wonder how many ex-Sharks we'll end up seeing in Toronto within the next few years?
