If you’re looking for native plants, this place sounds way cool. Yerba Buena Nursery in Woodside is “California's oldest retail nursery business specializing in native plants and ferns,” according to the company’s website. I came across it as it was recently named a Mercury News Staff Fave in the Best of Silicon Valley 2008, http://www.mercurynews.com/ci_9406508.

The Merc say there are 40 acres of “plants in lathe houses, greenhouses and open spaces that include towering redwoods and historic buildings” and over 600 species of plants. You can also check the Events link (http://yerbabuenanursery.com/Event.htm ) for tea times. The next one is Saturday, September 13 at 12 noon. There are also special Christmas tea lunches.

If you’re wondering why native plants are the way to go, they are drought-resistant. They also “form self-sustaining plant communities that do not require much maintenance,” according to the National Park Service website (http://www.nps.gov/plants/restore/pubs/intronatplant/whyusenatives.htm). I’m sure that Californians can also appreciate the fact that they “help slow down the spread of fire by staying greener longer.” In contrast, lawns waste a ton of water and the pollution created by a gas-operated lawn mower is troublesome. Pesticides used to treat lawns can also leach into water, contaminating it. You can learn more about how to reduce environment risks when caring for your lawn at http://safelawns.org/.
