It's not just the stock market that's tanking. Mother's Cookies is abruptly no more! I actually never realized that they were started here in the Bay Area and had a presence in Oakland up until this week.

I heard about this too. How sad. Mrs. Field's also recently filed for bankruptcy. Does this mean we can still the last of Mother's Cookies at any stores that still have inventory?

I'd be surprised if this was truly the last we've seen of Mother's cookies. It's gone for now and probably for a while, but I think eventually that the brand is iconic enough that eventually someone will want to buy the remants of the company.

From what I've heard, bags of frosted animal cookies are already difficult to score... not quite so for other kinds of Mother's cookies... yet.

I don't think Mother's closed. I have seen cookies in all varieties at Safeway and Target, and with newer freshness dates each time.

Wikipedia says:
In October 2008, the company filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy and laid off all of its workers.[1] In December, 2008, Lance Inc. was approved to buy the assets of Archway, and Kellogs was approved to buy the assets of Mothers.[14]

The passing of Mother's Cookies is indeed a sad day in the history of junk food. I loved their stuff. My personal favorite was the English Taffy - I just ignored the sound of my arteries hardening as I indulged.

Of course, everyone's ultimate favorite was the frosted animal cookies with the little sprinkles - the cookies were too small to have big sprinkles.

When I saw the news on cnn.com/money that Mother's was closing down, there was a link to tee-shirts commemerating the demise of the frosted critter cookies. My wife and I ordered up a couple. Nice keepsakes.

When I was on BART going to Union Square the other day, we passed through Oakland, I did not see the Mother's Cookies light anymore. So sad. My favorite are the animal cookies!
