Local Music Recommendations?
Posted: Aug 17 2004, 10:27 AM
As I'm getting caught up with programming and writing stuff for Social Wave, I'm getting back to my long lost hobby of hearing local music and finding out about some lesser known up and comers. Anyone have any local favorites or relative unknowns to suggest?
I've got a few groups on my mind right now to throw forth. More will come later.
If you like Bluegrass, keep your eyes peeled for the Waybacks, home grown and very much at large these days. If they're playing anywhere in the Bay Area, get tickets early. They come back around every few months.
There's another local gone large who'll be coming back to the area, Jazz/Contemporary musician Vienna Teng. I wrote a review about her stuff a while back and I just can't rave enough about her songwriting. I think she's playing at Montalvo, but tickets for that are all sold out. I'm looking for other dates.

during the summer, there are so many free shows it is tough to pay for anything. I really love the music at the park series for Mt View (ended last thursday), San Jose (ends 9/2 with greg kihn), Willow Glen, Campbell (ends this week) and they all fall on thursdays. Los Gatos, thank goodness, does Sundays 5pm and Jazz on the plaz on Wednesdays. I always love Tower of Power, Peter Frampton, and Starship on the Fair circuit. On fridays, the boardwalk brings an oldie but Goodie back to the beach in Santa Cruz.
If anyone knows of other shows, please post them so we can have a great summer to remember.

| How come you're not going to that show, Rick? |
Well, my brother bought those tickets for my birthday (it's the 13th so mark your calendars). But my Dad happens to be coming out to stay at a couple time shares in the area and we are going to spend a few days with him at Yosemite instead of going to the concert.

I've been wanting to find out about the local music scene. I used to do sound for bands back home and I played bass in the last band I worked for. I'd like to get back into doing that sort of thing one of these days.

How long have you been around here Rick? You moved here from NC?
If you like acoustic / folk/ singer-songwriter type of stuff, there's a few really good spots to check out. I'll post links to them in the links section later. In San Jose there's the Espresso Gardens. In Santa Cruz there's the Kuumbwa Jazz Center. In Berkeley the Freight and Salvage Coffeehouse has quite a reputation.
Back to the recommendations, I can't leave out my friends in BlahBlahWoofWoof. Two of them are on Social Wave and I've invited a few of them over to do a backyard house concert at my house. BlahBlahWoofWoof is a collaborative group of individual musicians (they sometimes play as a group). The members are Jay Howlett, [http://www.chuckmccabe.com]Chuck McCabe (aka UncleRhythm[/URL], Steve Kritzer, Megan McLaughlin, and Rolfe Wyer.

did somebody say local music? i know i've been absent for awhile, but this topic caught my eye...i have to put in a plug for my buddy's band Firme. They are probably the hottest thing ever to come out of East San Jose! How to describe Firme's music? Well, they like to call themselves "reggae salsa cumbia ska punkrock." Basically, if you like any of those genres, you'll love Firme. An eight-piece ensemble, they perform songs in both English and Spanish...sounds that tantalize the ear and compel you to get out of your seat, on your feet, and dance. These guys are about to break out on the scene in a big way, so I insist you catch them while you still can in one of our lovely local venues, like the Blank Club or the Brit. www.firmemusic.com

ImmaterialGirl, that band looks really interesting! I'd love to go see them sometime. They only have gigs posted for SF and Sacramento now. When they're playing in San Jose/Silicon Valley, can you post a notice to the events calendar? I'd really like to go, and it would be fun to get a group together to attend.

Sunday the 5th of September there is a show in downtown Oakland. The Art and Soul Festival, it is 5 dollars. There is more information about it on KFOGs web page. www.kfog.com
It is easy to get to, take BART and get off on 12th Street and just follow the crowd. ENJOY!
