Books to Prisoners Holiday Initiative at Old Capitol Books

Posted on December 3rd, 2015 by omba

Each month, staff and friends here at Old Capitol Books have been pooling our money to send books off to prisoners in California’s jails and prisons. This holiday season, we invite the Monterey community to open their hearts and send a prisoner the gift of a book. We believe that books and reading are so important that everyone deserves the chance to have access to good literature.

We have lists of prisoners in California’s jails and what they like to read. You can pick out a book and send a note, or simply get the book and we’ll do the rest. Anyone who wants to buy a book for a prisoner will receive 50% off that book and Old Capitol Books will package the book and send it off. Also, if you know someone in jail or prison, you can take advantage of this holiday sale!

The Old Monterey Foundation is pleased to announce that it has been selected as one of 144 non-profit organizations to participate in the annual Monterey County Gives! charitable fundraiser conducted by The Monterey County Weekly. Last year, MCGives! raised more than $1.3 million for charity and the goal this year is $2 million.

The essence of MC Gives! is to give worthy non-profits exposure and a platform to raise money for a “Big Idea.” Our Big Idea is the implementation of the Lower Presidio Historic Park according to the 2002 Master Plan, which will turn a largely unknown Park into the popular recreational attraction it should be. When we have completed Phase I of the implementation, the Park will look like and feel like a historic park to used by residents and visitors alike in the heart of downtown Monterey.

Contributions made to MC Gives!, designated for the benefit of OMF will come to us for use only on the Lower Presidio Historic Park. Learn about Monterey's vision for the park in this video. If the donation is made as a “challenge grant,” MC Gives! will add some amount from the challenge grant fund of $325,000 to our gift, depending on how much we raise in the total fundraiser. So the more you give, the more we will receive as your contribution will be leveraged.

$925.00 has been donated as a challenge grant to OMF, as of November 24. To donate, please go to the Monterey County Gives! website. Click on the “Donate” button and you will receive instructions as to how you can make your donation by credit card, PayPal, or by check. Be sure to designate the beneficiary as Old Monterey Foundation and the Lower Presidio Historic Park.

Cuvée Cerise Now Available at Alvarado Street Brewery

Posted on December 3rd, 2015 by omba

Alvarado Street Brewery is proud to present Cuvée Cerise! This Belgian-style barleywine began its life as "Cuvée de Monterey" last fall before undergoing a year-long stint in a Cabernet Franc barrel from Heller Estate. There we continually added tart red cherries to the barrel, and inoculated the beer with brettanomyces, which are a type of wild yeast that will scavenge any type of available sugars in the beer that remain, including those from the added fruit. Over time, "Brett”, as it’s commonly referred to in the beer and wine realm, dries the beer out and creates unique flavor compounds and esters which adds a unique complexity.

Fast forward to now, and Cuvée Cerise is an absolute cherry bomb in a glass, especially as it warms (cerise means "cherry" in French). Soft flavors of fig, plum, and dates follow the aroma, leading to a bone-dry finish with just a kiss of alcohol at the end. We've timed the release of this beer to coincide with the Thanksgiving holiday, as we feel its the perfect compliment to share with family and friends during this time of the year.

Donate to Keep the Carol of Lights Going Strong

Posted on November 30th, 2015 by DCBA

The 30th Anniversary of the Carol of Lights in Downtown Campbell is coming up in less than a week. We all love the Carol of Lights and want to keep it going, but in order to do so, we need to raise enough money to pay for the whole shebangs. There's no city funding for this. It's paid for through business sponsorships and small donations from people who've been generous enough to contribute a few bucks to help keep it going. If you love the Carol of Lights and you can spare a little money to help fund it, you can make a donation online through the Carol of Lights website.

Your donation will be made to the Campbell Parks and Recreation Foundation, a 501c3 organization. All donations collected will be set aside specifically to cover the costs of the Carol of Lights this year and in future years.
