Warning: Fire Inspection Scam in Monterey

Posted on July 4th, 2014 by lighthouseave

The Monterey County Fire Prevention Officers Association, together with the Monterey County Fire Chiefs Association, has issued a warning to alert business owners of a scam that includes mailed invoices from a fake fire inspection company.

At least one business in Monterey County was mailed an invoice this month from “RMZ Fire Safety” claiming payment $413.11 was due for fire inspection services that never occurred. RMZ Fire Safety’s mailing address on the invoice is in Walnut Creek, California.

The recipient reviewed the invoice and knew they had never received services from RMZ Fire Safety. Fortunately, the recipient had already been working with a local, licensed fire protection contractor, who informed them the invoice may be part of a scam. The local fire agency was called and notified of the false invoice.

The Monterey County Sheriff and District Attorney’s office have also been notified about the matter.

To avoid becoming victims of false-invoice scams, business owners should carefully review invoices before paying them to ensure the services have been received.

If anyone believes they have received a false invoice for fire inspection services, they can contact their local fire department’s fire prevention bureau, 831-596-4716.

The Lighthouse District's own Cat's Meow is playing a role in the West End Celebration's Imagine. Recreate. Fashion. Show and UpCycle Contest, and would like to announce a call for fashion designers!

The West End Celebration has long been known for art of every genre. This year, it will feature a spectacular fashion show entitled Imagine. Recreate. Fashion., focusing on sustainable fashion design, using pre-owned garments from Cat's Meow as the raw materials for expression.

The UpCycle Contest, taking place during the first half of the fashion show, will be an event at which each local contestant, selected from among a pool of applicants, will present fashions he or she has designed that are inspired by a specific Monterey peninsula artist using free materials from Cat's Meow. At the show, a panel of judges will select their favorites in each category, and the overall winner will be awarded one of twenty spots in the next Community Palette Annual Event.

If you are a fashion designer who would like to apply to participate, please click here for more information and to fill out the application form.

A Brilliant Boutique Collaboration

Posted on June 25th, 2014 by DCBA

When It's A Girl Thing, a high end fine jewelry and accessories consignment boutique and winner of The Mercury News "Best in Silicon Valley" suddenly lost their lease, owner Cindy Sanders called on her friend and fellow boutique owner Deb Rohzen, purveyor of unique new apparel and adornments at Simply Smashing! in Downtown Campbell. The two seasoned boutique owners set about finding a solution to this conundrum...the result: It's A Girl Thing has popped up at Simply Smashing!

Cindy has brought the best of the best of her stunning wares to Simply Smashing - a boutique within a boutique, if you will! It's the best of both worlds: high end designer bags and baubles, and Simply Smashing style all under one roof. The Quintessential Boutique Experience just got brilliant, daaahling! Come and visit us at 241-B East Campbell Ave. in Downtown Campbell.

Update: Social Wave 2.0 Launching on June 4th

Posted on May 30th, 2014 by sheldon

I wanted to let you know that we've had a slight change in plans with regards to the Social Wave 2.0 launch originally scheduled for June 1. Because of some unexpected delays (Murphy's Law, anyone?) the launch has now been scheduled for Wednesday, June 4.

On Wednesday, June 4, SocialWave.net will be down. No one will be able to edit or add new events and announcements to the website that day/night. In addition, there will be no Social Wave newsletter published the week of June 2.

If you have any questions, please feel free to email us at support@socialwave.net. We're looking forward to rolling out this new system and showing you what it can do!

Social Wave 2.0 Launches on June 1st

Posted on May 20th, 2014 by sheldon

It's finally going to happen. I talked a little bit about our plans to release an entirely re-imagined Social Wave in a previous announcement, but wasn't yet at a point in which I could nail down a date for the new release.

The new Social Wave system is nearly ready to unveil. We'll be doing that on June 1st, 2014 sometime during the day. Please expect the system to be unavailable for most of the day. Satellite sites like our Downtown sites will remain up, but you will not be able to add or edit events and announcements.

Undoubtedly there will be some bumps and bruises that will come along with a change of the magnitude that we have in store so we want to make sure that all of our regular users remember that they can email us at support@socialwave.net in case they have any issues after the relaunch.

Old Posts Will Be Left Behind
Every account that has been used at least once in the past three years will be ported over to the new system along with everything posted in the past five years under that account. Inactive accounts and content posted more than five years ago will be moved on a case by case basis. If you think you'll be affected by our decision to drop anything older than five years old, let us know and we'll include your stuff as part of our exceptions.

If you have a merchant profile and there's a photo attached to it that's older than five years, don't worry. It'll be included. Also, if anything gets missed, this old system is going to be available as a data source to grab stuff from for a good long while before we completely shut it down.

Everyone will need new passwords
One big thing that will affect everyone is that all accounts will need to reset their passwords upon logging into the new system.

No More Forums or Reviews
Discussion forums and reviews will be discontinued in the new release. At some point we plan to introduce a comments system, but that likely won't happen in the initial release.

New Features to be Rolled Out Regularly
It's going to take some time to get all of the new features that we'd like to implement completely built out. We plan to be adding to the new version on a monthly basis so we'll be actively soliciting feedback on what you like, don't like, and what you want to see.

The Monterey County Film Commission, located in the Lighthouse District, is pleased to announce that Jessica Moss, a student at CSUMB, was the winner of the 2014 Monterey County Film Commission’s Director Emeritus Richard Tyler Film Student Scholarship Award.

Moss, who hails from Marina, is a senior in the Cinematic Arts & Technology Department at CSUMB. She'll use the $2,000 award to help cover costs for her final thesis project, The Maw, an animated film short. Her film will use traditional animation, created frame by frame, in addition to digital animation. It requires specialized equipment as well as an extended time commitment.

For more information on the scholarship fund and Jessica Moss, please click here or phone MCFC at 831-646-0910.

Beginning May 12, 2014, the schedule for free group classes at Snap Fitness in the Lighthouse District will be changing to accommodate more members. The ever popular TRX Yoga Fusion Class will still be available Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays, 7pm-8pm, but on Wednesdays at 7pm, by popular demand, there will now be a Regular Yoga Class! This will give more Snap Fitness members the opportunity to get a workout with yoga instructor Cindy Singh.

What is TRX Yoga Fusion? It features the strength and training of TRX (Total Body Resistance Exercise) combined with the flexibility and relaxation components of yoga. Break down tension while building upper and lower body strength and mobility. Designed for all ability levels, this workout will leave you feeling stronger while giving you the peace of mind and flexibility of yoga practice.

Please contact Snap Fitness Monterey for more information on classes or memberships, 831-373-3990. Download our June class schedule here.
