Aquarium Renovations to Restaurant & Sea Otter Exhibit

In September 2012, Monterey Bay Aquarium will begin renovation of its sea otter exhibit and the cafe and restaurant. Both will re-open in spring of 2013. Needless to say, the rest of the Aquarium will remain open to the public.

During the renovation in the fall and winter months of 2012-13, the sea otter exhibit will be refreshed and the cafe and restaurant will receive a new name, design, and menu!

Temporary Road Closure

The City of Campbell would like the community to be aware of a temporary road closure of a portion of East Campbell Avenue in Downtown Campbell, from Central Avenue to the light rail tracks.

In order to minimize impact on businesses and commuters, the majority of the work will be performed at night. The closure will take place on Wednesday night, August 29, 2012 lasting until early Thursday morning, August 30. The road will also be closed on Tuesday, September 4, 7am-11am.

This work is being done to create a new utility connection for electrical service to 400 E. Campbell Avenue (the former Gaslighter Theater). The utility connection will require trenching on E. Campbell Avenue from an existing transformer in the westbound travel lane on E. Campbell Avenue to the project site. The closure is due to the narrow roadway and proximity to the light rail tracks.

Other work will taking place during the daytime hours, August 29 - September 7, 2012, will have traffic control in place as needed. This will allow through traffic, but the community is advised to expect traffic delays.

Movies in the Park Encore: Family Halloween Movie

The New Monterey Business Association is pleased to host a special Movies in the Park Encore on October 13 in Scholze Park! In honor of the season, this one will be a family-friendly Halloween film.

Sundown Cinema 2012 Audience Choice Voting

After four weeks of collecting nominations for the Sundown Cinema Audience Choice movie for 2012, we're down to four finalists in contention to win the honors to be the movie for our season end finale! With one exception, there's a definite musical theme to our finalists this year.

Voting closes at 4pm on Friday, August 24th. The winner will be announced at our showing of The Candidate later that night. You may vote for as many movies as you like. Let the voting begin and may the best movie win!

Downtown Campbell Farmers' Market Survey

The Downtown Campbell Business Association (DCBA) wants to hear what you think about the new layout for the Sunday Farmers' Market. In the DCBA's negotiations with Urban Village Farmers' Market Association and the City of Campbell, the decision was made by all parties to change how farmers' booths are arranged along East Campbell Avenue beginning July 15, 2012.

If you have attended the market since July 15, please let us know what you think! Send an e-mail to info@downtowncampbell.com answering the following questions and adding any comments you'd like to make. Your feedback will be taken into consideration as the groups decide whether or not to continue with the new layout.

1) I shop the Downtown Campbell Farmers' Market…

Submit Your Sundown Cinema 2012 Audience Choice Nominations

The 2012 Sundown Cinema season is approaching the half-way mark and that means it's time to start collecting suggestions for our August 31st season finale, the Audience Choice Film.

In this first round of the selection process, you can make up to three movie suggestions for the Audience Choice Film. You may email your picks to sundown@downtowncampbell.com, reply to this post, or submit your favorite films in person at Sundown Cinema. The deadline for nominations is 5pm on Tuesday, August 7th.

The most-nominated movies will be announced on downtowncampbell.com on August 15th, and you can vote for them in our online poll. Whichever movie gets the most votes by 4pm on Friday, August 24th will be screened on August 31st at our finale.

Send us your suggestions and may the best movie win!

Paper Wing Needs Your Financial Support!

Thanks to a grant from the STAR Foundation of Monterey County, the Lighthouse District's own Paper Wing Theatre will be able to afford a new, energy-efficient LED stage lighting system. But they are now faced with the task of raising money to have the system professionally installed. And that's where you come in!

Please consider making a donation to Paper Wing by clicking here. They are grateful for every donation of any amount! Paper Wing Theatre uses all donations, ticket sales, and gifts for maintenance and the running of the theatre - they rely on you.

The goal is to have the installation of the new lighting system completed by August 1, before the Northern California premiere of the Tony Award winning play August: Osage County by Tracy Letts. Thanks for your support of our local community theatre!

Cat's Meow Seeks Promotional Models

Cat's Meow is now seeking fun, talented models to help spread the sass here in Monterey! We want girls (and guys!) to sport our look and distribute promotional flyers at the Tuesday Farmer's Market. We would also like live models to pose in our window displays!

This is a paid gig, at $10 an hour. Must be 18 years of age. Previous experience is not necessary, but it is a plus. Play an instrument? Know how to hoop? Even better!

New Bus Rapid Transit Line for New Monterey - JAZZ

Monterey-Salinas Transit (MST) is in the process of implementing a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system that will run along the busiest traffic corridors on the Monterey Peninsula. BRT combines the high-quality service and speed of rail transit with the lower cost and greater flexibility of buses. To develop the first BRT corridor in Monterey County, the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) has provided $2.77 million in funding, and the state is providing an additional $2 million in transportation bond funds.

The new MST project, known as the "JAZZ" line, is a 6.75-mile Bus Rapid Transit line that starts at the Edgewater Shopping Center in Sand City and runs along Fremont in Seaside and North Monterey, through downtown Monterey and along the visitor-intensive Lighthouse Avenue corridor in New Monterey, ending at the world famous Monterey Bay Aquarium. The entire corridor is MST’s busiest route and is currently served by local buses carrying approximately 3,800 passengers per day. With the introduction of the BRT technologies, including queue jump lanes, transit signal priority (TSP), and increased stop spacing, travel times through this busy corridor will be decreased by as much as 25 percent.

This project involves the installation of custom-designed bus shelters that reflect a strong brand image for the new service. They will offer GPS-enabled electronic passenger information signage and other enhanced amenities, as well as minimal curb and sidewalk improvements to ensure that all stop locations meet ADA requirements. Pavement at stops and at the new queue jump locations will be upgraded to accommodate BRT operations. The low-floor buses that will operate on the BRT corridor are already TSP-enabled and will be repainted to reflect the strong brand image of the new service. It is not anticipated that right-of-way will need to be acquired as all project activities are expected to take place within the public domain.

In June, 2012 the project began construction, creating 40 local construction jobs in addition to fabrication jobs statewide. Operation of the BRT service is expected to commence in September of 2012 to coincide with the 55th anniversary celebration of the Monterey Jazz Festival. Flyer Publicizing Plastic Bag Ban

Beginning this Sunday, July 1, Monterey City Council has banned the distribution of single-use plastic bags and requires a 10-cent charge per paper bag. The City ordinance will affect retail shops but NOT restaurants.

The City of Monterey has produced a nice flyer you can print out and hang in your window. It has come to our attention that we had a technical glitch in our last message that made it impossible to download the flyer...sorry! 9 Films Marking 1967 at Museum of Monterey

The Lighthouse District's own Monterey County Film Commission, in collaboration with the Museum of Monterey, is pleased to present 9 Films Marking 1967, a monthly film series held in 2012 in conjunction with the museum's exhibition entitled Music, Love & Flowers: Youth & Culture Monterey 1967 & Now.

All films will be shown on Fridays at 7pm and Saturdays at 2pm at the Museum of Monterey Theatre (5 Custom House Plaza in Monterey). Admission is $10 (entrance fee for the museum), or $5 for members of Museum of Monterey and REEL Friends of the Film Commission.
