Donate Used Books to Monterey Public Library Friends and Foundation

Posted on March 25th, 2024 by lighthouseave

Do you have books gathering dust on your bookshelf? Monterey Public Library Friends & Foundation (MPLFF) is seeking donations of gently used books, which they will then sell, all proceeds going to Monterey Public Library programs and events.

MPLFF now welcomes book donations in the following genres:
First edition or rare books
Adult fiction
Mystery
Biography / Memoir
Local interest
History
Children’s picture books

At this time, MPLFF is not accepting coffee table books, children’s nonfiction, teen, DVD, CD, self-help, textbooks, or any books that are musty or damaged.

When dropping off your gifts, please pack donations in disposable bags or boxes and bring them to the Library's basement door (off the rear parking lot) on Wednesdays, 1pm-3om. If that time doesn't work for you, please email MPLFF and a volunteer will arrange a convenient time to meet you.

PLEASE NOTE: Book donations can NOT be accepted by Library staff, at the book return, or at the loading dock.

We've got some bad news. There won't be an Easter Egg Hunt this year at the Campbell Community Center.

The Eggstravaganza Easter Egg Hunt is an event produced by the Campbell Kiwanis Club and was spearheaded by one person, J.R. McKee, whose community contributions to the Campbell area community runs a mile long. He made that Easter Egg Hunt happen for many of its 41 years and he decided that last year's hunt would be his last.

The Campbell Kiwanis Club and their friends haven't found anyone to keep the event going so there won't be an egg hunt this year, but there are conversations happening to explore possibilities of bringing the event back next year.

The good news is that the Bunnies and Bonnets Easter Parade will still be happening at its usual time and we'll be stocking plenty of sidewalk chalk and bubbles for kids to play with before the parade starts. You're invited to come out early to have fun on the street in Downtown Campbell instead of spending the morning waiting for the egg hunt to start.

The annual Bunnies and Bonnets Parade in Downtown Campbell is less than two weeks away and we could use some extra volunteers to help us run the event. We'll be needing some people before the parade to hand out bubbles and chalk to kids and we may need help providing information to people coming to watch the parade as well as those coming to be in the parade.

If you'd like to help out at the parade, please fill out our Volunteer Registration Form. We also have other fun community events coming up that we'll need a hand at.

Looking to add a little humor to your day? Franklin Street Collaborative now carries an assortment of very funny mugs handprinted in Akron, Ohio. Each 15 oz. mug is microwave and dishwasher safe, and is sublimated (printed) with high quality materials so the silliness won't fade with washing.

Stop by and check them out, along with a great selection of home decor at 201 W. Franklin Street in Downtown Old Monterey.

We have new demo bikes at Work Horse Bicycles! If you want to try out an e-bike, we have Levo bikes by Specialized now in the shop. It costs $150 to try one out for 24 hours and if you like it so much you want to buy one, we’ll take the $150 off your purchase.

Work Horse Bicycles is independently owned and operated by local bike enthusiasts at 486 Washington Street in Downtown Old Monterey.

Lilify News and Big Sale

Posted on March 9th, 2024 by Lilify

It is with great warmth and excitement that Hanni and Jesse, owners of Lilify, announce that Lilify will be closing and a talented new team, a local family, will be moving in at 281 Lighthouse Avenue in Monterey, reimagining and reopening the space.

Before Lilify closes, they're having a big sale! The entire shop is now 25% off both in store and online. All sales are final. The online shop will close shortly and the brick and mortar will close following that.

The tables and displays that Jesse built for the shop are for sale, available only in store and first come, first serve, with no delivery, for $100 a piece, regardless of size, shape, or condition. (Please note that the 25% off does not apply and all sales are final.)

Please reach out to anyone that you have generously given a Lilify gift certificate to in hopes that they will redeem immediately. All gift certificates must be redeemed using the physical card or online code.

Please email Lilify with any questions.

A note from the owners:
On behalf of our family, the marvelous Lilify team, and the inspiring, innovative makers that we have had the privilege to showcase, we thank you. Fifteen years of steering Lilify has been an absolute honor.

Update, March 18, 2024: Lilify has closed. We'll post updates about the new retail store when it's ready to open!

Volunteer with Monterey Pride 2024

Posted on March 7th, 2024 by Pearl Hour

Calling all volunteers! Monterey Peninsula Pride is getting ready for our annual Pride Parade and Celebration in Downtown Old Monterey on Saturday, June 29. We rely heavily on community members just like YOU to pull off this joyful, family-friendly celebration.

Interested in volunteering on June 29? Please fill out the simple application form here. We have a lot of fun, and it's a great way to give back to the community and get to know local LGBTQ+ individuals and allies.

The Coastal Roots Hospitality Group - including Montrio restaurant at 414 Calle Principal in Downtown Old Monterey - has designated Seneca Central Coast as the nonprofit recipient of its Pick It Up - Pay It Forward Program for March and April 2024.

What does this mean? When you order takeout food from Montrio, 10% of your order will automatically be donated to this nonprofit agency. (Please note: this offer does not apply to delivery orders.)

Since 1984, Seneca Central Coast has helped build and strengthen families through vital community services including foster care, adoption, relative caregiver support, children’s mental health and wraparound services, legal guardianship assistance, and parent and professional education.

Easter chocolates are now available at Parker-Lusseau Pastries and Cafe in Downtown Old Monterey. We make everything in-house and have a variety of designs including eggs, rabbits, chickens, fish, and ladybugs.

We hope to carry our delicious chocolates right up until Easter (March 31), but we can't make any promises, so don't wait! Stop by the shop at 539 Hartnell Street in Downtown Old Monterey and pick up yours soon.
