In celebration of international Fashion Revolution Week in April 2021, Old Monterey's own Slowfiber organized a virtual fashion show featuring the creative powers and considerable skill of Monterey County residents and Slowfiber customers who sewed, knitted, upcycled, and mended their own clothing and accessories in this past year. And now you can watch the entire 27 minute fashion show on YouTube!

Featuring Slowfiber owner Jaki Canterbury, with creative contributions from 24 makers and menders, this fashion show video is fun, wonderfully artistic, and revolutionary, throwing off the shackles of fast fashion and moving towards a more sustainable future. This small but mighty first show by Slowfiber brings together a hive mind of makers, menders, and supporters. Enjoy!

Slowfiber is a retail store and educational studio that encourages everyone to explore sustainable fashion through its construction and preservation. Visit Slowfiber at 517B Hartnell Street in Downtown Old Monterey.

It's a 72% plant-based bar soap, infused with lavender and inspired by the traditional Savon de Marseille soaps of France, but made nearby in Carmel Valley!

Specially designed with plant based oils and soothing shea butter, this lovely rich lavender soap cures for 4 weeks and is then washed in salt water from the Monterey Bay. After being left to dry, it is once again bathed in water to rinse the remaining salt residue.

Savon de Carmel's soap contains no palm oil or parabens and is vegan, all natural, and organic. It is available in bars (small) or cubes (large) both in the store and online for curbside pickup or shipping.

Youth Arts Collective, located at 472 Calle Principal in Downtown Old Monterey, is happy to announce that we will resume in-person mentoring and art making on June 7. During this transition period we will need to limit the number of students attending at any one time until we return to the more open studios for the members at some later date.

Each of the current YACsters have committed to two chosen days per week. We will follow all safety protocols that the state and city mandates, including masks, social distancing, air purifiers, good ventilation, hand sanitizing, and daily cleaning. We also require all members and staff to be vaccinated.

For those young artists who want to apply to YAC, please email Marcia Perry to begin the process.

YAC’s Board of Directors, staff of artist mentors, and founders Meg and Marcia are all deeply grateful to the wonderful community of individuals, businesses, and foundations that have ensured Youth Arts Collective’s survival during this time of separation (including our landlord, Nick Craft!) Thank you one and all. YAC is coming back!

Do art. Be kind.

Posted on May 19th, 2021 by omba

The Old Monterey Marketplace and Farmer's Market is returning to Alvarado Street on Tuesday, May 25 at 4pm! We're beginning with a limited farmer's market for the first couple of weeks, featuring local produce and some crafts, as we work our way towards a full reopening on June 15.

The market will take place rain or shine every Tuesday, 4pm-8pm. For the safety of vendors and at-risk individuals, all shoppers must continue to wear a mask over their nose and mouth and maintain social distance. At this time, no sales are allowed to individuals not wearing a face covering. There will be hand sanitizer stations placed throughout the market. We look forward to seeing you!

On May 25, 4pm-6pm, Monterey Fire Department will offer the Johnson & Johnson Covid vaccine at the market. No appointment necessary - just show up.

The Monterey Bay Aquarium is a non-profit organization whose mission is to inspire conservation of the ocean. You can make a donation today and help them pay for the ongoing care of their wonderful animals and the maintenance of this legendary gem.

Inspired by the pair’s twelve years of annual creative retreats, which were recently interrupted by the pandemic, Kaffe Fassett and Erin Lee Gafill will once again paint the same arrangement of objects in unison. After the session, connect and reflect with the two artists during a question-and-answer session.
