Reading on the Ave Book Club: Unbroken
This event has already passed
All are welcome to attend the Reading on the Avenue Book Club, which meets in the Community Room of Willow Glen Library. On Wednesday, June 25, we'll be discussing Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, & Redemption by Laura Hillenbrand.
In boyhood, Louis Zamperini had been a cunning and incorrigible delinquent. As a teenager, he had channeled his defiance into running, discovering a prodigious talent that had carried him to the Berlin Olympics and within sight of the 4-minute mile. But when WWII came, the athlete became an airman. On a May afternoon in 1943, his Army Air Forces bomber crashed into the Pacific Ocean and disappeared. Zamperini struggled to a life raft and pulled himself aboard, and so began one of the most extraordinary odysseys of the war. Ahead of Zamperini lay thousands of miles of open ocean, leaping sharks, a foundering raft, thirst and starvation, enemy aircraft, and, beyond, a trial even greater. Driven to the limits of endurance, Zamperini would answer desperation with ingenuity; suffering with hope, resolve, and humor; brutality with rebellion.
