Old Catpiol Books and the Close to Home Collective present their first online workshop, Sublime Imprecision: The Magic of Rough Edges, led by Janice Blaze Rocke and Marc Zegans on Thursday, May 28, 7pm-9pm. Registration is required. Please register online here.

In this workshop we will explore nuanced ways of writing about topical issues and events, emphasizing the role of the senses in grounding oneself in the writing process. We’ll examine how subtle and offbeat approaches can help consumers of our creative work think mindfully about complex phenomena that on the surface appear simple.

Please note: this event has been postponed. Old Capitol Books and the Close to Home Collective present the return of the Rubber Chicken Poetry Slam hosted by Garland Thompson, Jr., on Wednesday, June 3, 7:30pm-9:30pm. And now, for the first time, we're doing it online!

Come perform or witness the competitive poetry event that has become a local institution. Come strut your stuff, or watch the slam unfold as a spectator. Poets should sign up here on the day of the event.

OTHER MUSIC
Other Music was an influential and uncompromising New York City record store that was vital to the city’s early 2000s indie music scene. But when the store is forced to close its doors due to rent increases, the homogenization of urban culture, and the shift from CDs to downloadable and streaming music, a cultural landmark is lost. Through vibrant storytelling, this documentary captures the record store’s vital role in the musical and cultural life of the city, and highlights the artists whose careers it helped launch. Watch the trailer.

CRESCENDO
When world-famous conductor Eduard Sporck accepts the task of creating an Israeli-Palestinian youth orchestra, he is quickly drawn into a tempest of unsolvable problems. Having grown up in a state of war, suppression, and the constant risk of terror attacks, the young musicians on both sides are far from able to form a team. Will Sporck succeed and make the young people forget their hatred, at least for the three weeks until the concert? Watch the trailer.

Paper Wing Theatre Company thanks all of our many patrons and supporters for your generosity and donations during this uncertain time! If you'd like make a contribution, please visit our GoFundMe page which is not only helping our theater with bills and maintenance but is helping us distribute donations to our actors and crew who have been affected by the coronavirus and the fallout from it.

We have a big announcement to make. Paper Wing had plans to open a Theatre Supper Club in June at 711 Cannery Row for upscale dinners and shows. But, like other businesses, we've had to alter our plans drastically.

After canceling our productions of Cabaret, Star Wars burlesque, and Oh Brother Where Art Thou?, and not being able to get into our building for 2 months, we are very pleased to announce we will be opening the kitchen portion of our new dinner theater at 711 Cannery Row within three weeks for takeout and delivery. Food will be delivered by costumed actors as we create the new concept of "Dinner and a Show to GO!" Our menu will be California Coastal Cuisine, serving lunch and dinner, with breakfast options on weekends...think fresh fish, chopped salads, wraps, burgers - lighter yet filling.

As we are finishing up the theater side of our new Theatre Supper Club, we will continue to follow County recommendations to keep our kitchen open for takeout and we joyously look forward to the day that we can safely open our doors for performances as well as delicious meals! Stay tuned!
