The Mercury News published a nice little article about one of the members of our Downtown Campbell Business Association that's responsible for organizing many of the fun events and activities that you enjoy in Downtown Campbell. It's a special treat for us because earlier we got to honor a DCBA member of the year and one of our other members is being honored as a citizen of the year. Like, Kelly Crowley, our DCBA member of the year, Kimi has poured her heart through volunteerism into making Downtown Campbell and the Campbell area community in general a better place to live, work, and play.

Kimi has been active in the Campbell community ever since Delphi Academy moved into their space at the Campbell Community Center. She's the headmistress of the school and she's served on the committees producing the Carol of Lights, Bunnies and Bonnets Parade, and other projects the DCBA has supported. You can read a bit more about her in this Mercury News article and you can come celebrate her and the things that she and others do for the Campbell community at the March 18th, Celebrate Campbell event at Villa Ragusa.

Webster Street Businesses Open During Road Work!

Posted on March 4th, 2017 by omba

There has been a lot of road work lately on Webster Street in Old Monterey between Hartnell Street and Munras Avenue, but while the road may be closed, your friendly local businesses remain open! That first block of Webster Street houses a variety of fantastic restaurants, salons, and much more. Please consider visiting those businesses this month, spending some cash, and showing your support for these great little owner-operated spots, some of which have seen a steep decline in customers because of the road work.

Would your organization, business, or school like to march in Monterey’s 4th of July Parade? The Old Monterey Business Association invites you to apply using our online form! Entry applications must be received by May 30, 2017. Entry applicants are subject to approval by parade organizers - respond early to be considered for placement.

Parade entries are required to be entertaining, creative, exciting, and family-friendly (appropriate to be seen by all ages). You can participate with a float, push float, band, colorful costumes, uniformed attire, drill, dance team or comical routines, antique or unique vehicles, etc. Think outside the box!

The parade route is one mile long, beginning at the corner of Polk Street and Hartnell Street, continuing west on Alvarado Street to Del Monte Avenue to Calle Principal, ending at Jefferson Street. Anticipated attendance is 15,000 people. Parade begins at 10am on Tuesday, July 4.

Please read parade guidelines carefully and submit your application online.

The spring season is rapidly approaching and it’s time for land owners, project managers, and others with biological compliance and permitting needs to plan spring surveys. EMC Planning Group biologists have the specialized knowledge and skills to complete a wide range of presence/absence surveys, and conduct habitat assessments for sensitive plant and wildlife species...and their office is based right here in Monterey's Lighthouse District.

Services include, but are not limited to, focused surveys for nesting birds, rare plants, California red-legged frog, California tiger salamander, burrowing owl, Swainson’s hawk, western snowy plover, and many more special-status species occurring in the region. Our firm also provides construction monitoring, regulatory agency permitting, restoration planning, and CEQA/NEPA compliance.

Due to the limited survey window for various species, it's recommended to schedule your spring biological surveys early and avoid the risk of project delays. Please call senior biologist/certified arborist Andrea Edwards at 831-649-1799 ext. 209 to discuss your project needs.

Attention California Playwrights! Paper Wing Theatre in Monterey is soliciting new, unpublished, original full-length plays for its Fourth Annual Summer Play Reading Festival, June 7-11, 2017.

Paper Wing Theatre’s play-reading festivals offer a rare opportunity for writers to share their hard work with the world. The reward, if selected, is the opportunity to hear their words read onstage and to receive honest feedback from actors and audience members. There is also the possibility that the theater will include the play among its productions, the ultimate goal of any playwright. The play Mozambique was chosen from the 2015 festival, and the play Daughters of Nothing from the 2016 festival.

Submission guidelines and application forms are available for download here. You can also send an email to PWTreadingfestival@gmail.com with the subject: “Guidelines and Application Form.” Due to the large number of submissions we receive each year, we ask that you review the guidelines carefully, complete the application form, and include the required attachments with your submittal.

Send submissions with all requested information to PWTreadingfestival@gmail.com. Deadline to submit work is April 2, 2017.

A lot goes on in Downtown Campbell. We have street entertainment twice a month, wine walks, beer walks, art walks, and lots of other odds and ends events that make Downtown Campbell such an engaging little downtown. The membership of the Downtown Campbell Business Association (DCBA) is responsible for much of what happens in Downtown Campbell and if it were not for their countless hours of volunteer work, Downtown Campbell would not be the place that it is today.

Each year, the DCBA picks a member of the year to honor for all of their hard work and contributions to the social climate in Downtown Campbell. This year we're honoring Kelly Crowley, the general manager and driving force behind the popular sports lounge, Khartoum. Running a popular watering hole is already a lot of work so it's no small wonder how she finds the time to do as much as she does for the rest of Downtown. Kelly is a board member of the DCBA, the current treasurer, a past membership chair, coordinator of the Second Saturdays Artwalk, an organizer of our wine walks, and has been involved behind the scenes of many other activities for many years.

We couldn't be happier and prouder to say that Kelly Crowley is our member of the year for 2017. If you see her, show her some love. She's worked her tail off to help make Downtown Campbell the place that it is.

Please join us at the annual Celebrate Campbell Awards Dinner on March 18th to thank Kelly for her work.

(Kelly's third from left in the silly photo if you count Will Ferrell's disembodied head, but if you're not into counting famous comedians, she's second from left in the middle.)
