Presidio of Monterey Museum Seeks Information About Buffalo Soldiers

Posted on August 1st, 2022 by lighthouseave

Jordan Leininger, an artifacts specialist with the City of Monterey, is seeking information from descendants of Buffalo Soldiers stationed at the Presidio of Monterey, 1902-1904. He is currently researching the lives of the Buffalo Soldiers (members of the all-Black 9th Cavalry Regiment of the U.S. Army) for an exhibit at the Presidio of Monterey Museum, located in Lower Presidio Historic Park.

Leininger is looking for interesting artifacts and images as well as stories which he can use in the exhibit and in a future paper to help teach the public about Monterey's Buffalo Soldiers. He is particularly interested in why the soldiers were in Monterey, where they went, and what the soldiers and their families thought about their time in Monterey.

Leininger adds, "I’m not asking people to give us anything...I would love at a minimum just to get a look at these items to...be able to scan them, take pictures of them, so we can use it for this history.”

You may contact Jordan Leininger at (831) 646-5648 or via e-mail.

To learn more, please read Winifred Brown's article on this topic on the U.S. Army website, from which this post was distilled.

City of Monterey Honors Rick Johnson

Posted on July 20th, 2022 by omba

On July 19, Monterey City Council and staff recognized Rick Johnson, who has served as the executive director of the Old Monterey Business Association for 22 years and as the administrator of the Lighthouse District (a.k.a. New Monterey Business Association). Rick, who is California's longest serving leader of a business association, will be retiring at the end of July.

The Old Monterey Business Association would like to thank Rick for his many years of service to our community. His natural charm, sense of humor, abiding love for the people of Monterey, and his in-depth knowledge of businesses and government infrastructure will be missed.

But don't worry, Rick Johnson is not leaving Monterey! He's looking forward to spending more time with his family and friends and relaxing a little after leading two business associations through a pandemic lockdown. And our district is in great hands with the OMBA's new executive director, Peter Cofresi, who's been serving as our assistant executive director for years.
