The City of Monterey announced on Monday, April 6, 2020 that it strongly advises the public to use the Recreation Trail only when commuting to and from work. Over the past several weeks, congestion along certain segments of the trail because of recreational users has made it virtually impossible for cyclists and pedestrians to maintain a six-foot distance to stay in compliance with the CDC's coronavirus health guidelines.

“We know that social distancing works to flatten the curve and reduce the spread of COVID-19,” said City Manager Hans Uslar. "Our iconic Recreation Trail will be available for recreational use when the Stay at Home Order is over.”

During the Stay at Home Order, the City of Monterey encourages residents and the public to walk in their residential neighborhoods, especially in areas where a 6-foot physical distance can be maintained between people.

The City recognizes that the Recreation Trail is used by essential workers commuting to work, and asks that the public respect the advisory which allows the trail to be used by commuters as a critical bicycling and pedestrian thoroughfare between Downtown Old Monterey and New Monterey. On April 3, signs were installed along the Recreation Trail advising the public of its use for commuting purposes only at this time.

Want to support small, locally-owned businesses? Buy a gift card...or two! As you probably know, small businesses in Old Monterey are really suffering during this coronavirus shutdown. Even in the best of times, running a small business is a challenge. The profit margins are small and the hours are long. Now restaurants are open only for take-out and delivery and retail stores and salons are closed entirely.

We've got to shelter-in-place to slow the Covid-19 pandemic. But if you're one of the lucky people whose bank account hasn't been destroyed by the events following the coronavirus outbreak, please consider supporting Old Monterey's temporarily shuttered businesses with the purchase of gift certificates you can use when they're able to re-open their doors. Look for the "Gift Certificates" button in each business profile.
