The Fiscal Year 2017-2018 Neighborhood Improvement Program (NIP) is now open. Residents can submit their projects using the NIP Project Nomination Form, available online here. Forms are also available in the Engineering Office at 580 Pacific Street, Room 7 in Monterey.

A NIP project is any public improvement (not on private property) that improves streets, storm drains, sewers, sidewalks, walkways, lighting, traffic control devices, landscaping and beautification, parks, recreational facilities, and other public building improvements. Submitted projects will be reviewed for consideration by the NIP Committee.

Monterey’s Neighborhood Improvement Program is one-of-a-kind in the nation. Per the City Charter, 16% of the annual hotel tax is dedicated to neighborhood improvement projects. This fiscal year more than $3 million will be allocated to the NIP. Over the past thirty years, the NIP has invested over $55 million into the City for the benefit of the community.

Save the online form to your computer, fill it out, and attach it in an email or print out a copy and mail it to the Engineering Office at 580 Pacific Street, Room 7, Monterey, CA 93940-9902. The submission deadline is February 17, 2017, but we encourage participants to submit their ideas by December 1, 2016.

Your suggestions and participation in the NIP program are important. We look forward to hearing from you! For more information, please phone (831) 646-3887.

The New Monterey Business Association thanks the New Monterey Neighborhood Association for alerting us to this information.

Thanks to everyone who came to our annual Trick or Treating on Lighthouse Ave yesterday! We have a lot of photos from the event and we'll have them posted in the next 24 hours. In the meantime, here's a cute little video we shot of some of the kids enjoying their afternoon in the Lighthouse District. Turn the sound on for maximum cuteness.

Want to pass out candy with a bit of intrigue this Halloween? Or perhaps you'd like to make a Halloween party extra interesting by dressing up your treats with a global flavor? International Market and Deli has various candies from around the world for you. They have some of the favorite worldly sweets from Germany, Greece, Russia, Lebanon, Iraq, and many other places.

Diversifying the kinds of candies and treats that they carry is part of what the new owners are doing with the International Market and Deli. They've been taking suggestions from the very culturally diverse people who live in Monterey to stock their shelves with global delights that are hard to find in the Monterey area. If there's something you remember fondly from your old homeland or from your travels abroad that you'd like to get around here, please stop in and let them know.
